The Women’s section of the Richmond Football Club are embarking on a 12 day tour of Argentina in August 2008.
Following the success of the Argentinian men’s squad at the 2007 World Cup, there has never been a more exciting time for the development of rugby in Argentina. Richmond Women’s Football Club will be the first English women’s team to tour there, playing three games during a 12 day tour – including a game against the Uruguayan national team.
The 25 team members embarking on the tour are continuing the fine tradition of both the Richmond Football Club’s touring achievements, having previously toured to New Zealand and South Africa.
The tour is of special significance given that the Argentinian Rugby Union have asked Richmond to assist in the launch of a campaign to promote women’s rugby.
Formed in 1861, Richmond is the one of the oldest rugby clubs in the world and caters for both men and women in various London competitions. The women’s section currently has 80 registered players making it one of the largest and most successful in England. The 1st XV again finished within the top three of the Premiership in the 2007/2008 season, having been title winners in recent seasons.
In this highly successful season they been finalists in the Premiership Cup, National 7s and the women’s Middlesex 7s tournaments. The 2nd XV have consistently been in the top of National League 1 and were losing finalists in the Championship South playoff held at Bath’s Recreation Ground. The 3rd XV play in National Challenge 1 South East and there is also a junior academy for ages 12 -17. |
