The England Students team recorded their first victory of the 2003/04 season with a great display against an experienced Army side, winning 29 - 7 at Newbury RFC on Friday 5th March.
The two teams were very evenly matched, but it was the students who took an early lead, when full back Georgina Roberts finished off a great move in the corner.
The Army pressed hard for an equalising score, but the students' defence held strong, and a great 50metre pick up and run from the back of the scrum by captain and Number 8 Lynn Hodgkinson doubled their lead. It was 10 - 0 students at half time.
The students started brightly after the break and a good individual move was scored and converted by fly half Nancy Stone.
The army responded with a well worked try by the fly half, converted by their captain to make the score 17 - 7. They continued to put pressure on the young England pack, but the students again held firm.
A try by Vice Captain and winger Clare Davies finished off another great move, and replacement centre Antonia Perrott scored the final try with replacement fly half Alice Lovett completing the scoring with a successful conversion to make the score 29 - 7.
The England Students next game is on Sunday 28th March v Scottish Students, 2pm KO in Edinburgh. Further games are taking place on Sunday 11th April v Sweden, 1.30pm KO at Syston RUFC, and finally on Friday 16th April v British Police, 5pm KO at Blaydon RUFC. The Army's next game is against Rosslyn Park and takes place on Wednesday 24th March, 6pm KO at the Aldershot Military Stadium.
