Richards, who has been head coach of the England women’s rugby team since 2000, made his debut for the Wallabies in 1978 and played in three tests, but was never presented his cap. The cap was spotted in a Sydney rugby archive last year and brought back to England to give to Richards in a surprise presentation.
Richards hails originally from Hornchurch, Essex, but moved to Sydney in 1977. There he played full back for New South Wales, played three tests for Australia and was twice captain/coach of the Australian 7’s team in Hong Kong.
Richards commented: “it was a total surprise to be presented like that, I didn’t have a clue about it! It was a fantastic way to get my cap presented to me. I was informed by the ARU in November that they had the cap, but I couldn’t make the presentation. It was great to be presented by Michael Lynah. I didn’t even get suspicious when the bad Aussie music was being played at The Stoop!”
