They thought we were mad!
And now we’re going to prove they were right!!!
12-hour Rugby is back and we need YOU!
On 7th September 2002, over 90 women rugby players came together at Altrincham Kersal Rugby Club for a charity 12-hour rugby match. Players came from all over the UK as well as our international contingent from France, Canada and Belgium with ex-England captain Gill Burns kicking off the match. From 8am to 8pm there was champagne rugby and tries a-plenty, and along the way we raised nearly £10,000 for charity.
12-Hour rugby will be happening again on August Bank Holiday Sunday 29th August 2004 and we require the help of players and sponsors. It doesn’t matter what level of rugby you play, come and join in and help us raise money for 2 great charities: ‘Breast Cancer Campaign’ and ‘Pit Pat, The Pituitary Foundation’. And don’t panic – you won’t have to play for 12 hours - we are arranged into squads and roll on / off throughout the day. Camping will be available and there will be entertainment at 8pm when we’ve finished the important part of the day!
Any potential sponsors of the event should contact the committee for more information. There are many options available from balls, to referees, to players, to kit.
12-hour rugby founder Vicky Brookes developed the idea whilst looking for a way of fundraising following surgery treatment for a pituitary tumour, ‘I wanted to find a fun way to give something back to the people who have given me and thousands of others a huge amount of support dealing with Pituitary disorders. With so many people we know affected by breast cancer we also wanted to show support for Breast Cancer Campaign, research into the disease is important to all of us’. During the last event, Vicky played against her mum, Christine Brookes who will be coming out of retirement to pull on her boots for this year’s match. Vicky is hoping this year will be well-supported and even more successful than last time, ‘12 hour rugby sounds exhausting but we had a fantastic response last time, including our very own streaker! Even if you’ve never played rugby before – find a club now and get a bit of practice before coming to help us raise even more money than last time!’
