Regional Triangular Matches - 28th March
On Sunday 28th March, 3 venues played host to the Regional triangular matches. It proved to be a fantastic day of rugby, aided by the warm welcome from all 3 host clubs. The success of the day was due to the excellent contribution from the RFUW regional volunteers. The regional teams now prepare themselves of the regional festival over the weekend of 8th (seniors) and 9th (U16 & U18) May at Lichfield RFC. On the evidence of skill and commitment shown throughout the programme, rugby of the highest quality will be on show. – All supporters and interested parties welcome to come along – watch this space for more information.
A brief summery of the triangular matches:
Yarnbury RFC – North East, North West & Yorkshire
In the first U16 game at Yarnbury, the North West took on Yorkshire. After trailing 5-15 at half time, the North West came back to win 20-19, with Meg Youden scoring 3 tries, captain Kirsty Marshall also went over for a try.
The North East U16 defeated the North West 10-0.
In the U18 matches at Yarnbury, the North East triumphed over the North West, winning 27-0. The North West team was captained maturely by Lizzie Oliver.
In the senior matches, North West narrowly defeated Yorkshire. A powerful run Pam Read, converted by Helen Clegg, saw the NW home.
Old Albanians RFC – East, London & SE (E), East Midlands
The East Midlands U16’s lost narrowly to London & SE (E) U16, 5-15. But were victorious over the East, winning 19-7. Kathy Burke, Harriet Billam and Emily Scarratt all crossed for tries, with Scarrat converting 2 out of 3.
The East U16 lost a close game vs London & SE (E) 0 -5,
Katherine Liakos proved to be the difference between the East Midlands and the East U18’s. The match was evenly contested and with the score 0-0 at half time. Two tries from Liakos proved decisive, and following a late try from the East, East Midlands held out to win 10-5. This high quality match was played in a good spirit throughout.
Liakos, scored her 3rd try on the day in the defeat at the hands of the London & South East (E). The powerful, well drilled London & SE (E) turned around at half time 21-0 up, the East continued to persevere in both attack and defense and were rewarded with a consultation try
London & SE (E) were also victorious against the East U18, winning 15-12
In the Senior Games, a strong London & SE (E) scored 9 tries in their 55-7 win over the East. Fullback Vicky Dibolin scored a hat-trick with 2 tries coming from number 14, Sally Morris. However, the large deficit in the score line did not reflect the commitment and attitude of the East players.
Supermarine RFC – West Midlands, South East (W), South West (N), South West (S)
The senior representative team from the South West (S) defeated West Midlands 8-0 and the South East (West) 14-0. However in the South West derby, the South defeated the North 15-0.
