The England Women’s team are settling into their base at the University of Calgary, which coach Geoff Richards says has some of the best sporting facilities he has ever seen.
The team take on the Canadian Women in the opening weekend of the Churchill Cup at Calgary Rugby Park on Saturday (12.30pm WST).
Richards is delighted with the facilities at the University, saying: “The accommodation is fine – a little spartan as you would expect from student accommodation but the girls have their own rooms so are happy. The sporting facilities on the campus are fantastic - they are amongst the best I have seen in the world, including the Australian Institute of Sport.”
The team flew direct to Calgary and have spent the first couple of days acclimatizing and recovering from the long flight. All four women’s teams participating in the Churchill Cup (USA, Canada, New Zealand Black Ferns and England) are based at the University, but have been allocated different training grounds as they prepare for their opening matches.
England beat Canada in injury time of last year’s inaugural Churchill Cup and Richards is looking forward to another tough match on Saturday.
“Everyone is looking forward to playing Canada. It was a close game against them last year but we are better organized this year and have brought out a stronger squad,” he added.
The England Women’s team will be announced to the media via e-mail at 10am (5pm BST) on Thursday 10th June.
