England Women Meet Tony Blair

Eight England women’s rugby stars are set to meet Tony Blair at Downing Street this evening.

In an evening to celebrate a ‘summer of sport’, England players will mix with established and future sports stars at number ten. Representatives from the England women’s senior team will attend alongside exciting young players who will hopefully be stepping up to the senior squad in the lead up to the 2006 World Cup.

Fly half Karen Andrew commented: “it’s not every day you get invited to Downing Street! This is a great opportunity for us to not only meet Tony Blair and top sports stars, but also to raise the profile of women’s rugby in general. Attending an event like this is a real bonus.”

RFUW Chairman Sue Eakers added: “we are obviously delighted to be represented this evening at number 10. Women’s rugby is growing rapidly, both in terms of participation numbers and popularity. This summer is truly a fantastic summer of sport, and we are excited to share in tonight’s celebration.”

England players attending this evening:
Rachael Burford
Jane Leonard
Danielle Waterman
Louise Seymour
Shauna Vetch
Nicola Crawford
Karen Andrew
Claire Frost

Eakers and RFUW Managing Director Rosie Williams will also attend.

The Blair reception will highlight young people in elite rugby, swimming, golf, tennis, squash and football, alongside stars such as World Cup winner Matt Dawson, together with young people who just love playing sport and getting active in their free time. The Chelsea and England star of Euro 2004 Frank Lampard, hurdler Colin Jackson and England coach Sven Goran Eriksson are amongst those also attending.
