Club Funding

The following is a selection of grants and funding resources, listed by geographical region.

UK and Ireland

  • Architectural Heritage Fund - a registered charity which helps to repair and give new life to historic buildings of every kind throughout the United Kingdom. Since 1976, it has loaned over £30m to about 400 projects, and helped many others with grants and advice. (27/7/2000)
  • The Arts and Humanities Research Board - provides funding for university museums and galleries. (7/8/2000)

  • The Association of Charitable Foundations publishes information for grant-seekers and researchers, including a variety of leaflets published online.
  • Association of Community Trusts and Foundations - the umbrella body for community trusts. 2 Plough Yard, Shoreditch High Street, London EC2A.
  • Association of Medical Research Charities offers a free online database of grant-making organisations that fund medical research charities. It offers 18 search criteria including capital, research in nursing, travel, project, and therapy research grants.
  • Awards for All - a grants programme set up to help small groups, offering between £500 and £5,000. It is a joint programme supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Arts Council of England, Sport England the National Lottery Charities Board. Applications can be made at any time and decisions are made within three months. (28/7/2000)
  • British Council - connects people worldwide with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK and builds lasting relationships between the UK and other countries.
  • Charities Aid Foundation is a grant-making body as well as an information resource for charities and donors. Guided by an independent group of experts nominated by other voluntary organisations, the CAF Grants Council responds to applications from charities looking to increase efficiency, to develop new initiatives or simply to survive when another source of funding dries up. The Grants Council makes grants of over £400,000 each year on behalf of CAF; it distributes much more on behalf of Government, Companies, Foundations and other donors.
  • Charities Information Bureau - since 1981 has provided information, advice and training about funding to not-for-profit organisations throughout West Yorkshire. Runs five Funding Points where users can use FunderFinder and other fundraising library resources.
  • City of London Livery Companies listed by the Corporation of London.
  • Community Foundation Network (formerly Association of Community Trusts and Foundations) - community foundations are grant-making trusts that build and manage endowments for the long-term benefit of voluntary and community groups within specific geographic areas.
  • Community Fund - formerly the National Charity Lotteries Board, it is the independent organisation set up by Parliament in 1994 to distribute money raised by the National Lottery to support charities and voluntary and community groups throughout the UK and to UK agencies working abroad. You can search for recipients by name, region, political constituency, project cost and other criteria. Sadly for fundraisers keen to learn from others' mistakes, it does not include information on applications that have been rejected.
  • Department for Culture, Media and Sport publishes information on the National Lottery, the good causes it supports, the distributing bodies, and the awards granted.
  • Department for International Development
  • Devon Local Development Agencies Forum (Deldaf) - a charity which aims to promote, support and develop voluntary and community organisations throughout Devon. Lists trusts and companies that support Devon-based organisations.
  • English Regional Arts Board - information service for the arts and cultural sector.
  • Environmental Trust Scheme Regulatory Body Ltd (ENTRUST) - the sole regulator of the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme
  • EnvironmentAwards.net - an online database of grants available for environmental and sustainable development projects and organisations, published by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts Manufactures and Commerce (RSA). (1/6/2001)
  • European Briefing Unit, University of Bradford - provides training on the EU for the public and voluntary sectors, including courses and conferences on EU funding and policies.
  • FundingInformation - from Profunding, publishers of Funding Digest, provides fundraisers with a constantly expanding source of up-to-the-minute information including new sources of UK grant-aid from Trusts, Government, the Lottery, special awards and bursaries, individual giving and detailed guidelines on funding from the EC.
  • Funding Information North East (FINE)
  • Grants On-line - provides information on financial resources and other assistance available to support the development and regeneration of local economies and communities. Features EU, UK government and National Lottery grants. Originally free to access but started charging from January 2002.
  • Digest of Health-related Research Funding and Training Opportunities from the Department of Health.
  • Heritage Lottery Fund
  • Higher Education Funding Councils of England, Scotland and Wales
  • J4b - helps your business find out what grants and loans it may be eligible for. Launched in January 2001, charity specific information is scheduled for later in the year. (5/7/2001)
  • London Borough Grants - provides grants to voluntary organisations working in London, which are providing quality services to their client groups. Invests over £28 million each year in 580 voluntary organisations.
  • The London Voluntary Sector Training Consortium advises voluntary organisations on seeking funds from the European Union. In July 1999 it published Accessing the European Social Fund: a financial guide for voluntary groups, a free guide to the financial aspects of seeking and receiving grants from the European Social Fund.
  • The Millennium Commission - distributes Lottery money to assist communities in marking the close of the second millennium and celebrating the start of the third.
  • National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA)
  • National Foundation for Youth Music
  • The National Lottery Charities Board, was renamed the Community Fund on 9 April 2001.
  • Netribution Film Network - includes funding section for film students, budding film-makers and industry professionals across the UK.
  • New Opportunities Fund - created by the National Lottery Act 1998, is responsible for distributing National Lottery grants throughout the UK for health, education and environment initiatives. You can search for successful applications by country and region, grant size, programme title, and project name.
  • 4Ps - the agency that oversees the function of Private Finance Initiative contracts in England and Wales. (19/6/2000)

Europe

  • Allavida (Alliances for Voluntary Initiatives and Development) - international non-profit organisation that brings together grant-making, training and capacity building, and research and publishing. Our goal is to provide the resources - funding, skills and information - that people and organisations working for the development of their communities need in order to achieve their own objectives. Formerly Charity Know How and Alliance magazine. (7/8/2001)
  • Charity Know How - former name of Allavida, an independent charity.
  • Eurohousing - for housing and community regeneration organisations which contains up to date information on European policies, funding opportunities, and key legislation. Ceased to be updated from 7 November 2001.
  • European Commission Representation in the UK
  • European Foundation Centre - set up to promote and underpin the work of foundations and corporate funders active in and with Europe.
    Established in 1989 by seven of Europe's leading foundations, the EFC today has a membership of over 160 independent funders and serves a further 7,000 organisations linked through networking centres in thirty-five countries worldwide.
  • European Social Fund
  • Funders Online offers access to a range of European funding and grantmaking resources. A project of the European Foundation Centre and other international partners, its Funders Online Directory offers access to profiles of foundations and corporate funders' Web sites. The Directory is also searchable by funder's areas of interest, indexed by subject focus, geographic focus, population focus and types of support.
