England Women’s rugby players will play at Twickenham this year as a curtain raiser to the men’s international against Scotland on Saturday 19th March 2005.
The match will be the final game of England Women’s Six Nations campaign, as they hope to regain the title they last won in 2003 when they achieved The Grand Slam. In the 2004 competition England were narrowly beaten by France 13-12 in Bourg-en-Bresse in the Grand Slam decider in March.
Commenting on the decision to play the final match at Twickenham RFUW Managing Director, Rosie Williams said:
“We are very pleased that the RFU are supporting us by hosting the Scotland match at Twickenham. It is a great setting for the Women’s Six Nations and is a fantastic experience for all the players involved. After defeat in our final match last year, the girls will be very keen to go one better, especially at the home of England Rugby. I am sure it will be a great occasion for all involved.”
Chris Spice, the RFU’s Performance Director agrees that it is an excellent opportunity to showcase the women’s game:
"We are pleased to be able to support the women's game in England. Playing at Twickenham is a great opportunity for England Women's Rugby to demonstrate to the wider public how much the sport has moved forward in recent times."
