Dowson gets suited and booted for Rugby World Cup

Thursday 3rd March 2005
England Sevens and Newcastle Falcons flanker Phil Dowson, 23, was at Twickenham with the rest of his England Sevens team mates today making final preparations for the forthcoming Rugby World Cup Sevens.

The World Cup squad are being sponsored by Tom James for their formal suits, and Oliver Sweeney, who also sponsor the senior England team, are providing their formal shoes.

Phil, who has been to the Hong Kong Sevens as a spectator before, can't wait to get to Hong Kong, "My mother was born in Hong Kong and I went to the sevens as a spectator in 1997, and its an awesome tournament.  Hong Kong is the most famous sevens event and for the World Cup to be held there makes it even more special.  I was thrilled to be called up into the squad and hope to make the final tournament squad. To play in the World Cup in Hong Kong would be fantastic.  My mother lived over there until she was seven and she is coming over to watch the World Cup with my sister."

Dowson will be joined in the squad by his Newcastle Falcons team-mate Mathew Tait, as they prepare for the World Cup over the next two weeks.  Dowson said, "Taity was over the moon to be in the squad.  I think he is pleased that we are both there so I can look after him!"

Speaking on his new outfit, Phil said, "The suits and shoes are really nice and I feel very smart for a change!"

The Rugby World Cup Sevens begins in Hong Kong on Friday 18th March 2005.
