England put fourteen past spirited Spanish

12th March

England impressed again in a 14 try, 76-0 win against a spirited Spanish side at Imber Court today. There were hat-tricks for Captain Jo Yapp and Kim Shaylor, both of Worcester.

Yapp who missed the win against Ireland through injury was glad to be back:

“It was a bit scrappy in the first half, but we still managed to score 6 tries. After half time we managed to move the ball around a bit more and scored some really good tries. I was just pleased to be back, so to score three was a real bonus. Credit must go to the whole squad though, it was a real team effort.”

Wasps’ Sue Day grabbed a brace before half time and Thirsk Sharks’ Michaela Staniford scored her first for England when she finished off a well worked move in the second half. Vicky Massarella, Charlotte Barras, Susie Appleby and Amy Turner also got tries for an England back-line that seemed to score almost at will. Henley’s Rochelle Clark made sure the forwards had their say with a score from a typical driving run in the 70th minute.

Head Coach Geoff Richards was understandably pleased with the performance:

“I thought we played really well and credit to the whole squad for the way we stuck to the task for the full 80 minutes. The Spanish are no pushover as their other Six Nations results show, so to score 14 tries and concede none is a big achievement. Some of our handling was superb which led to some great scores. I am just really pleased with the performance all round.”
