Monday 16th January 2006. The England Under 16s had a successful start to their new year with a divisional festival at Castlecroft this weekend. The youngsters played four matches in front of the England selectors with the ultimate aim of being selected to represent their country in one of the Under 16s tests in April. On Friday the Midlands drew with the South West (10-10) in the opening match of the festival, followed by a win for London and the South East over the North 15-10. On Sunday, there was another draw this time between London and the South East against the Midlands, whilst the South West were triumphant over the North. Speaking on the festival, George Squires, England Under 16s manager said, "We were all very impressed by the standard of the boys. It was a successful festival and a good chance to assess performance as we near the tests in April." The England selectors have selected a provisional training squad of 40 who will not take part in the second Divisional Festival at Castlecroft on January 29 when the North will play the North and the South West will take on London.
An extended squad of 70 players will then be named to take part in a training camp at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire from February 15 to 19.
