Uruguay and USA play off to face England at Rugby World Cup 2007

August 14 2006
England will face Uruguay or the USA in the pool stages of next year's Rugby World Cup following the latest round of qualifying games.

Bedford's James Pritchard scored a record 36 points - made up of three tries, five conversions and three penalties - as Canada beat the USA 56-7 in St John's, Newfoundland.

The result sends Canada into RWC 2007 Pool B to face Australia, Wales, Fiji and the leading Asia qualifier, likely to be Japan.

And it forces the USA into a two-legged play-off with Uruguay for a place in Pool A alongside world campions England, South Africa, Samoa and one repechage qualifier.

Uruguay host the USA in Montevideo on September 30 with the return game taking place in Stanford, California, on October 7.

England have met Uruguay only once at Test level, winning 111-13 in a 2003 World Cup pool match at Brisbane with Josh Lewsey scoring five tries.

The world champions have played and beaten the USA four times in internationals with the last meeting a 48-19 win in San Francisco in the summer of 2001.
