England Team to face New Zealand

30 October 2006
ENGLAND today named new caps Anthony Allen and Shaun Perry for Sunday’s Investec Challenge series opener against New Zealand at Twickenham.

Gloucester Rugby centre Allen, 20, and 28-year-old Bristol Rugby scrum-half Perry will line up against the All Blacks in a team captained by Leicester Tigers’ Martin Corry.

England Head Coach Andy Robinson OBE said: “I’m delighted for Anthony and Shaun as well as the other players selected for what will be a huge challenge.

“Anthony has really come through this season and it is a testament to Gloucester and the RFU Academy system that he is now ready to play against the No 1 team in the world at the moment.

“Shaun was unfortunate not to tour in the summer because of a wrist injury but he has maintained his form from last season and it’s now right that he gets his chance.”

Last season’s RBS 6 Nations captain Corry resumes as skipper in front of crowd boosted to an 82,000 capacity with the opening of Twickenham’s new South Stand.

Robinson added: “Martin captained the England team very well last year and throughout those matches led the side from the front. Charlie Hodgson, Ben Kay and Shaun Perry have been named as vice-captains for this game. All three have a major impact on the way we play and I am very confident they will give Martin valuable assistance.”

Josh Lewsey (knee), Olly Morgan (shoulder) and James Forrester (knee) were not considered because of injury, while Mathew Tait has returned to Newcastle Falcons to continue his rehabilitation after a thigh strain.

The replacements' bench has yet to be confirmed.

The Team in full:

15 Iain Balshaw Gloucester
14 Paul Sackey  London Wasps
13 Jamie Noon Newcastle Falcons
*12 Anthony Allen Gloucester
11 Ben Cohen Northampton Saints
10 Charlie Hodgson Sale Sharks Vice Captain
*9 Shaun Perry Bristol Rugby Vice Captain
1 Andrew Sheridan Sale Sharks
2 George Chuter Leicester Tigers
3 Julian White Leicester Tigers
4 Danny Grewcock Bath Rugby
5 Ben Kay Leicester Tigers Vice Captain
6 Martin Corry Leicester Tigers Captain
7 Lewis Moody Leicester Tigers
8 Pat Sanderson Worcester Warriors

Supporters are advised that there is a new gate system in place for the first match, and the number of additional spectators means everyone is advised to get to Twickenham early on the day.

Richard Knight, RFU Stadium Director, explained, "As part of the development we have introduced an improved gate and turnstile system.  We are asking people to arrive at the stadium at least 45 minutes before kick off (kick off is at 3.30pm) to ensure everyone is in their seat for the start of the match.  Everyone with seats in the south stand is hopefully aware that the roof is not due to be in place on the south stand until early next year, so please plan for extreme weather.

The shuttle buses will be in action as usual but the pick up point for Hounslow station will be at Tescos, with the others in the usual spot outside Gate 4 (on Rugby Road).  We hope everyone has an enjoyable visit to the improved stadium."
