Arctic Monkeys fan Jewell aims to shine when sun goes down

ROOKIE Seb Jewell will pull on an England shirt for the first time tomorrow night and plans to shine when the sun goes down at Bath’s Recreation Ground (7.30pm)

The Arctic Monkeys fan will set aside his 20GB iPod after being handed the No 10 shirt for England Under-20s against Scotland in the opening clash of the Under-21 Six Nations Championship.

With London Wasps’ Danny Cipriani ruled out with an ankle injury after being unable to train at the University of Bath this week, Jewell gets an unexpected chance to look good on the pitch rather than the dance-floor.

And the 19-year-old is pinching himself at his England debut midway through his first season with NEC Harlequins Academy following his switch from Richmond.

“I am very excited,” said the Windsor-born Jewell, “this time last year I was playing for Richmond Under-19s and was second choice fly-half for London and the South East. Now I’m starting for England Under-20s against Scotland and have trained against Jonny Wilkinson and Toby Flood this week!

“I am looking forward to it. I will be focused but I’m trying not to think about it too much. I’ll probably chill out tomorrow and then listen to some tunes on the way down to the ground.”

The Rugby Football Union, along with the other Home Unions, have switched from Under-21s, England having won the Grand Slam last season and also in the 2003/04 season, to an Under-20s age grade, with France and Italy due to follow suit in 2008 in an Under-20s Six Nations Championship.

England follow their opener against Scotland by playing Italy Under-21s, again at the Rec (February 9), Ireland Under-20s in Athlone (February 23), France Under-21s at Northampton (March 9) and Wales Under-20s at Newport (March 16)

And coach Nigel Redman is putting behind him the loss of Wasps’ pair Cipriani and Dominic Waldouck (hamstring), as well as Saracens flanker Andy Saull (groin), and is excited about England’s first venture into this age group.

“We’ve trained hard and we have had to make some changes but that gives others opportunities and we are looking to these guys to take the lead as much as anyone else tomorrow night,” said Redman.

“I’m desperately disappointed for anyone who doesn’t start. We have had an unfortunate amount of injuries, particularly in the backs with Jordan Turner Hall and Tom Youngs another two who haven’t made it here, plus Andy Saull.

“But the good thing is this gives people who we haven’t previously seen an opportunity to play international rugby at Six Nations level. It’s desperately disappointing for some but an opportunity for others such as Seb Jewell, who has been terrific all week.”

Redman has coached England at Under-21 and Under-19 level, including an emphatic 36-5 victory over Scotland at the Twickenham Stoop last February.

“I treat every tournament differently but I just want to get the best out of this group of players. On paper we have a great squad but, as the cliché says ‘you don’t play on paper, you play on grass’,” he said.

“We had a good win against Scotland last season but every nation has moved on and the challenge for our players is to show how much they have moved on. It pits their development against the best of Scotland. What we did last year is not an indication of how it’s going to go this year.”

England will make a late decision on London Wasps full-back David Doherty, who sat out tonight’s captain’s run with a cold, with Saracens’ Frankie Neale standing in as cover.
