Saracens wing in fast lane with Under-19s

April 20, 2007

Saracens wing Noah Cato believes England can finish with a flourish against France tomorrow and secure a fourth win in five games at the IRB Under-19 World Championship in Belfast.

The team go into the fifth place play-off at Shaws Bridge tomorrow (3.30pm) on the back of an impressive 31-13 win over Argentina.

And the 19-year-old from Brighton produced his best performance of the international campaign against the Pumas, scoring two long-range tries in the team’s devastating opening spell and playing a significant role in two more touchdowns.

Now the challenge is for the team and player to maintain that form against a France side they have already beaten 29-5 in a friendly this season.

"In a way we had nothing to lose and we really went out there very relaxed against Argentina," said Cato. "We played the way we wanted to, rather than letting the opposition put pressure on us and changing the way we play.

"The back three did get the ball in their hands in wide positions and in space made it the type of game you want to be involved in. If you need to keep it tight to win a game then you have to do that, of course, but personally it was great to run around.

"The France game should be very similar to Argentina we’ve played them before and it could go either way, but we know it’s a big game and we can look at what we’ve done against them in the past to get ourselves up for it."

Cato has enjoyed a successful first season with Saracens after being spotted by Mark Mapletoft now part of the England coaching team in Belfast at last year’s Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens.

He moved straight from Hurstpierpoint in Sussex where John Green and Rob Kift coached the first team to the Saracens Academy and a Sports Science course at the University of Hertfordshire where the Guinness Premiership club have their training base.

So far the move has paid off with 14 tries in 10 appearances in the Guinness A League and a first team debut at the age of 18 in the EDF Energy Cup against London Wasps.

"Playing club rugby with Saracens and at this England level has really helped me come on and if I can keep learning at the same rate I’ll be really happy," he said.

"It would be exciting to be involved again with England Under-20s next season because once you’ve had a bit of exposure at this level you start to feel more comfortable. I’d hope to perform more strongly from the start rather than taking that bit of time to settle in."

The only regret is that England couldn’t pick up the two bonus points they needed in their group games to secure a semi-final place and a shot at the title that New Zealand and South Africa will contest at Ravenhill tomorrow night.

"It’s frustrating that we could win all bar one of our games and only finish fifth, whereas another side could win two out of five and finish fourth," he said.

"We just didn’t do ourselves justice in the first two games, but if we do on Saturday it’ll be very good to have been involved with a squad that’s got such a high win-rate."
