Worsley in as Moody ruled out

10 August 2007
Lewis Moody has been ruled out of the England team for Saturday's Investec Challenge against France at Twickenham (5pm)

The Leicester Tigers flanker has suffered what England head coach Brian Ashton has termed a "tiny" calf muscle tear.

His place in the number seven shirt will be taken by London Wasps' Joe Worsley, who started at openside flanker during the record 62-5 victory over Wales last Saturday.

Bath Rugby lock Steve Borthwick moves onto the replacements' bench instead of Worsley, with Martin Corry providing back-row cover.

Head Coach Brian Ashton said: "Lewis complained of a niggle in his right calf and we agreed last night not to take a risk with him so Joe comes in. If we'd played Lewis he could have then been out for six weeks and that is not acceptable as far as player welfare is concerned.

"I've also got three players on standby in the event of England incurring another late injury as we did last week with Mark Cueto (Sale Sharks) in the warm up. Perry Freshwater (Perpignan), Dan Hipkiss (Leicester Tigers) and Richard Wigglesworth (Sale Sharks) are all available and attending the game if we need them.

"Last week showed us where we are as a team but we are facing a much bigger challenge this week against what I'm sure will the strongest French starting XV and bench available.

"It's important that all of the England players who take the field on Saturday think clearly and control their emotions on the day and that they display the right attributes. There has been a strong element of competition throughout the squad and an element of uncertainity about their places in the 30 man RWC squad to be announced on Tuesday and that's a good thing."

England: N Abendanon (Bath Rugby); P Sackey (London Wasps), J Noon (Newcastle Falcons), M Catt (London Irish, capt), J Lewsey (London Wasps); O Barkley (Bath Rugby), S Perry (Bristol Rugby); A Sheridan (Sale Sharks), M Regan (Bristol Rugby), M Stevens (Bath Rugby), S Shaw (London Wasps), B Kay (Leicester Tigers), J Haskell (London Wasps), J Worsley (London Wasps), L Dallaglio (London Wasps). Replacements: L Mears (Bath Rugby), P Vickery (London Wasps), M Corry (Leicester), S Borthwick (Bath Rugby), A Gomarsall (Harlequins), J Wilkinson (Newcastle Falcons), D Cipriani (London Wasps).
