England 16 Group name revised training squads

February 26, 2008

The England 16 Group selectors have named two squads to continue preparations for this season’s international tournaments.

An England Under 16 squad of 26 players and an England Under 16 A squad, also of 26 players, will train together and each play a practice match during this week’s development session at Solihull School (Friday February 29 - Sunday March 2).

England U16 will face Saracens Academy Under 17s (Sunday March 2, 1.30pm) preceded by England U16 A taking on the Midlands Division (Sunday March 2, 12pm).

These practice matches, which are not full representative fixtures, will run along similar lines to those played last Saturday (February 23) at Hartpury College when England, captained by Owen Farrell, beat Millfield School Under-17s 47-0 and England A defeated The Rest 37-5.

Every player had at least 25 minutes to make his case with each match lasting two periods of 25 minutes and one of 20.

England scored nine tries against Millfield, most of them wide out, including two from left wing Sam Edgerley, with one conversion kicked by fly half George Ford.

The selectors met at the conclusion of the five-day Hartpury camp and made one promotion to the revised 26-man England squad for the Solihull School get-together with No.8 Matthew Kvesic of Blundell’s School and Devon stepping up from the England A ranks.

This is the next step towards England U16’s participation in the Four Nations Tournament against France, Italy and Wales in Lyon (March 17-27) and England U16 A competing in the Millfield International Festival (March 31-April 6).

“Hartpury was the first chance to see these England Under 16 teams go into battle together,” said George Squires, England’s team manager.

“The backs ran some good patterns and there were a lot of good tries scored.”

Edgerley will be busy this weekend as his school, Wellington College, have a delayed Daily Mail Under 18 Schools Cup quarter-final to negotiate. Edgerley will train with his England squad mates on Friday and join up with Wellington for their match against RGS Newcastle on Saturday afternoon before returning to Solihull for the following day’s England practice game.
