Stegmann eyes Grand Slam chance with Under 20s

March 11, 2008

Seb Stegmann is relishing the chance to claim a Six Nations Grand Slam in his first season with England’s Under 20s.

The Harlequins wing claimed a place in the starting line-up after Miles Benjamin was recalled by Worcester to play in the Guinness Premiership following England’s opening win over Wales

Since then the 19-year-old has grown in stature throughout the campaign, claiming a first try in the 41-15 win over Scotland to help set up the Grand Slam showdown with Ireland at Gloucester on Friday night (7.35pm).

Stegmann struck early on at Falkirk supporting Alex Goode’s counter-attack down the right to put England 10-3 ahead seven minutes into the game.

And after those wins against Wales (28-15), Italy (22-13), France (24-6) and Scotland, he’s eager to finish the job at Kingsholm in front of a live TV audience on Sky Sports.

"It’s an awesome feeling to have been involved in the Scotland game we’ve gelled together well and completed all the things we set out to do so now we’ve got to keep on performing," said Stegmann, who played for England’s Under 18s in Australia last summer.

"I was looking to get my hands on the ball more and it was important to score as quickly as we did. I hope to bring that to the Ireland game if selected.

"Friday’s going to be a massive game. We thought playing France in front of 20,000 was pressure but playing for a Grand Slam is something else. Everyone really wants it and you can see that."
