Greendale and Kitchener start Under 20s Grand Slam game

March 12, 2008

England U20 v Ireland U20 is live on Sky Sports 2 on Friday night

Adam Greendale makes his first international appearance of the season as England’s Under 20 side attempt to complete their Six Nations Grand Slam against Ireland at Gloucester on Friday night (7.35pm).

The Leeds Carnegie fly half replaces Rob Miller, who has been called into the Newcastle Falcons first team squad for this weekend’s game against Bristol.

England also hand a first start for Graham Kitchener (Worcester Warriors), who replaces suspended Saracens lock Ben Thomas.

Greendale, 19, is an experienced youth team international after starting at number 10 for the national Under 16, 18 and 19 teams and appearing at two IRB U19 World Championships.

Kitchener, 18, is a pupil at Adams Grammar School in Newport, Shropshire, who appeared for England at Under 18 level last season.

Added to the bench are uncapped Northampton lock James Cannon the son of Saints legend Vince Cannon and wing Dan Norton, who was on duty with Gloucester in the Guinness Premiership last weekend.

England, coached by Nigel Redman and Mark Mapletoft, are playing for their Six Nations Grand Slam after victories against Wales (28-15), Italy (22-13), France (24-6) and Scotland (41-15).

But to do so they have to defeat Eric Elwood’s Ireland side, whose predecessors were the unbeaten winners of last year’s tournament.
