Cato's star rising with final fence in sight

March 13, 2008

Noah Cato will be urging his England team-mates to stick to the script when they attempt to secure the Under 20 Six Nations Grand Slam tomorrow night.

On a big racing day in Gloucestershire punters will have the chance to watch Kauto Star secure the Gold Cup at Cheltenham, then see Cato star up the road at Kingsholm.

The thoroughbred winger is one of the game’s hottest prospects at the moment after scoring five tries in four international outings in wins over Wales (28-15), Italy (22-13), France (24-6) and Scotland (41-15).

Next in the firing line are Ireland, holders of the title after getting up on the rails to beat Wales last year after trailing 20-7.

Coach Nigel Redman has stressed that tempo, physicality and decision-making have got them into the position to complete the clean sweep.

And while Saracens wing Cato admits a try in the final game would be "the icing on the cake", a high-class performance from his team is the most important thing.

"We can’t go off the track of what we want to be doing," Cato said. "We want to play with the game plan we’ve been using this season, impose ourselves on the opposition and not go off-script.

"As far as the hype about this game goes, we’ve got to this stage but it won’t mean much if we don’t finish the job off. I’m definitely thinking about it and it’s important for everyone to stay focused.

"It would be the icing on the cake to score but a good performance from all of us is the most important thing and anything else would be a bonus."

The team and Cato have all kicked on since last summer’s Under-19 World Championship, where England finished in sixth place.

"We’ve moved on a lot over the last year and merging what was the Under-19 side with guys coming out of the Under-18s has given us a lot more strength in depth," Cato said.

"There’s a versatility within the squad too I’ve had to move to full back, Alex Goode has moved from 10 to 12 and that shows the flexibility we’ve got.

"At Saracens I’ve just had to keep on working. I had a good first year but it was crucial that I carried on that upward curve and I feel I’ve achieved that.

"With England it was a massive help to get off to a good start by scoring against Wales and having a good game and getting that confidence really boosted me."

Try-scoring has been no problem this season and Cato the grandson of former Brighton soccer legend Glen Wilson tops the try charts in the Guinness A League and scored on his Guinness Premiership debut against Leeds Carnegie.

Making the next step up into the Premiership starting line-up and beyond is his next step and Cato is looking forward to taking any chances offered at Saracens in the remainder of the season and when former Australia coach Eddie Jones takes over this summer.

"As a player, my coaches were telling me that I had all the attributes to go on and be a high level player," said Cato.

"Now it’s down to things like game understanding, analysing the games I’ve played in and learning from the experience so I can make the right decisions, pre-empt things and get into better positions.

"Eddie Jones takes over in the summer and it’s only natural that there will be some trepidation about that so it’s important to kick off on the right note and I’m really looking forward to it."
