Saxons prop Wilson gets senior call up

June 16, 2008

England Saxons prop David Wilson will celebrate Saturday's Barclays Churchill Cup victory over Ireland A with a call up to the senior squad.

The Newcastle Falcons prop arrives in New Zealand today in place of Andy Sheridan, who received a eye injury in the first Test and has been ruled out for next weekend's rematch.

Said Wilson, "My immediate thoughts are with Andrew but I’m pleased to hear that his recovery is expected to be a relatively quick one.

“I knew England Saxons was a possible stepping stone for me but I didn’t expect the call up to come quite so soon!

“I’m disappointed to be leaving the Saxons, having helped them to get there I was really looking forward to playing in the Barclays Churchill Cup final, but obviously this is a huge honour and not something I could say no to.

“I played against the Barbarians a couple of weeks ago but I massively want to get my first cap. I know it may not happen in New Zealand but it’s a big step in the right direction and it’ll be a great experience for me.”

Sheridan, who will remain with the squad and continue his treatment with the England medical team, said "I’m obviously very disappointed to get the news but I’ve got to follow the medical advice I’ve received. The laceration should be fully healed in a fortnight.”

England Saxons play Scotland A in the Barclays Churchill Cup final in Chicago on Saturday, June 21, kick off 2.05pm (8.05pm UK time, live on Sky Sports 2). England Saxons head coach Steve Bates has yet to make a decision on Wilson’s replacement.
