Hotshot Luger back at Twickenham

Hotshot Luger back at Twickenham

Dan Luger will bring his formidable try scoring record to Twickenham on September 20 as the latest recruit in the Help for Heroes match (2.30pm).

The winger - arguably one of England’s top finishers with a strike rate of 24 tries in 38 matches - will be back on home turf for the first time since 2003.

The 33-year-old will feature in the Help for Heroes XV alongside fellow 2003 World Cup winners Will Greenwood, Mark Regan, Martin Johnson and captain Lawrence Dallaglio.

Luger will return to the scene of his injury-time try from Iain Balshaw’s kick that gave England victory over Australia in November 2000.

“A chance to play at Twickenham doesn’t come around very often, this could be my last chance and I wanted to grab it.” said Luger.

“It’s going to be fantastic, look at the guys that have already agreed to play. Help for Heroes is a great cause to be part of.

“The past couple of seasons I have been playing for Toulon (France) so I’m in quite good shape, but I will be getting in some extra training to prepare for this match.”

Greenwood added: “I was asked by Lawrence if I would take part and I didn’t hesitate to say yes. It’s a tremendous cause and I’m glad to be involved in it. It’s going to be great to be reunited with some of the guys.

“When Lawrence first sold me the idea it sounded to be a bit of an exhibition game but clearly with these players it’s not the case. It’s going to be full on, a proper game of rugby!”

This will be the first time that all five men have played together since 2003 and Regan can’t wait to see some old friends.

“I’m looking forward to meeting up with some old acquaintances and meeting some new ones!” said Regan.

“This is a very good cause. It’s our chance to raise awareness and some much needed money for the men and women who have risked their lives for us.

“Although it’s a Guinness Premiership weekend I have full support from my club, Bristol Rugby who were happy to let me go and play in such a worthwhile match.”

The Help for Heroes XV, managed by former England captain Phil de Glanville, will face an International XV managed by Ieuan Evans and captained by Scott Gibbs.

Tickets for the Help for Heroes match on September 20 are available from Ticketmaster on 0844 8472492 or www.Ticketmaster.co.uk

Tickets are priced from £20 for adults, £10 for juniors (under 16) with a family ticket for two adults and two children costing £50.00.
