Robinson: Tait made me look silly

2 February 2005
England captain Jason Robinson admits even he’s been made to ‘look silly’ by teenager Mathew Tait.

The 18-year-old centre makes his first start against Wales on Saturday – eight months after taking his A levels and with only a dozen appearances for Newcastle Falcons behind him.

But after Tait beat him to score for Newcastle against Sale earlier this season, Robinson admits he is seriously impressed.

And he believes a star could be born at the Millennium Stadium when Tait becomes the youngest Englishman to make his international debut since Johnny Wilkinson came off the bench against Ireland in 1998.

"I got my head in the wrong position when I played against him. I thought he was going to step me but he just bumped me off that day," said Robinson.

"He showed me how strong he is. He's been playing superbly for his club. I've played against him a couple of times this year and on that one occasion he really made me look silly.

"He's got a lot of pace, he's confident, he's a strong lad. Playing against Wales in one of the best stadiums in the world, the atmosphere's going to be great and hopefully we will see a star born.”

Despite making several changes to the side beaten 21-19 by Australia, Robinson is confident England have the men to do the job in Cardiff.

He highlights a talented backline, with Charlie Hodgson, Jamie Noon and Tait the young guns in midfield supported by the captain, his Sale team-mate Mark Cueto and Wasps wing Josh Lewsey.

"A lot of people have retired, a lot are injured and there are a lot of new faces but I am sure this team will do a good job," said Robinson.

"There's been a lot of talk this week about who's not playing but I think the team that is playing is a very exciting team. We've got a lot of pace in our backs.

"I'm excited about our backs and hopefully we'll cause them a lot of problems."

"We've done our homework, we know what they are all about. They've made comments about exciting and entertaining the crowd but the main thing for us is just winning the game.

"The main thing about England is our strength in depth. If guys are good enough we believe they are old enough. And we believe we have got a team to beat Wales."
