Martin Corry Suspended for three weeks

20 April 2005
England captain Martin Corry received a three weeks suspension when he appeared before a Rugby Football Union disciplinary hearing in Coventry this evening.

Corry admitted striking Saracens flanker Richard Hill with his elbow while he was playing for Leicester Tigers in last Sunday’s Zurich Premiership match at Vicarage Road. Corry was sent off by referee Chris White for the offence.

Richard Moon, the chairman of the disciplinary panel, said: “The heartfelt manner in which he addressed the panel reflected his regret that he had let down his club, his team-mates and himself.”

The panel also accepted that Corry’s actions were reckless rather than intentional.

Corry’s suspension will take immediate effect and he will be free to resume playing on May 11.

After the hearing Leicester issued a statement on Corry’s behalf. “I feel that I have let the whole club down, especially the supporters,” he said. “All I can express is my sincere regret.”

Corry was also ordered to pay £250 in costs.

The other members of the disciplinary panel were Bob Taylor, the RFU Council member for East Midlands, and Keith Plain, Gloucestershire’s representative on the RFU Council.
