“Everyone who’s anyone in England Sevens is here and it’ll be interesting to see them playing against each other for their clubs,” said Monye, at 22 already a major force for England on the world Sevens circuit.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to impress particularly as it’s the first look Mike Friday will get of potential players for the next year.
“The Commonwealth Games next year is the target for everyone and they’ll be the crescendo of the season.
“It’s particularly important after we missed our chance last year, when we were trying to get the Sevens World Cup to go alongside the 15-a-side World Cup. We’ll be desperate to come back with medals after missing out at Manchester in 2002.”
Gloucester have yet to name their side but have half-a-dozen Sevens specialists on their books, including England captain Simon Amor and internationals Rob Thirlby, Will Matthews and James Bailey.
But the talent is spread widely among the other teams and the Army have the luxury of being able to leave Fijian World Cup Sevens winner Apolosi Satala out of their squad.
“Gloucester will be a match for anyone and could just about field a complete international Sevens team,” said Monye.
“But Worcester Warriors will be another very good side with Pat Sanderson captaining them and Newcastle also have lots of experienced Sevens players. The Army also have a large bunch of Sevens specialists so it should be a highly competitive day.”
