Monye: Sevens stars out to impress at Twickenham

09 August 2005
The road to Melbourne starts at Twickenham for the England Sevens stars intent on winning places at next year’s Commonwealth Games.

All the country’s top players are on show at Saturday’s Compass Group Middlesex Sevens, when teams from the 12 Guinness Premiership clubs are joined by the Army – who won last season’s tournament – Blackheath, Bedford and NEC Harlequins.

Among them will be the likes of Pat Sanderson (Worcester), Mathew Tait (Newcastle Falcons), Chris Jones (Sale Sharks), Richard Haughton (Saracens) and Ugo Monye (NEC Harlequins) in arguably the strongest line-up of players ever seen at the 78-year-old tournament.

Harlequins wing Monye, who captains his club side at Twickenham on Saturday, reckons all of them will be out to impress England Sevens coach Mike Friday at the start of a campaign that will feature eight legs of the IRB World Sevens Series as well as the Commonwealth Games tournament in Melbourne on March 16-17.

“Everyone who’s anyone in England Sevens is here and it’ll be interesting to see them playing against each other for their clubs,” said Monye, at 22 already a major force for England on the world Sevens circuit.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to impress particularly as it’s the first look Mike Friday will get of potential players for the next year.

“The Commonwealth Games next year is the target for everyone and they’ll be the crescendo of the season.

“It’s particularly important after we missed our chance last year, when we were trying to get the Sevens World Cup to go alongside the 15-a-side World Cup. We’ll be desperate to come back with medals after missing out at Manchester in 2002.”

Gloucester have yet to name their side but have half-a-dozen Sevens specialists on their books, including England captain Simon Amor and internationals Rob Thirlby, Will Matthews and James Bailey.

But the talent is spread widely among the other teams and the Army have the luxury of being able to leave Fijian World Cup Sevens winner Apolosi Satala out of their squad.

“Gloucester will be a match for anyone and could just about field a complete international Sevens team,” said Monye.

“But Worcester Warriors will be another very good side with Pat Sanderson captaining them and Newcastle also have lots of experienced Sevens players. The Army also have a large bunch of Sevens specialists so it should be a highly competitive day.”

Tickets for the whole day can be bought via Ticketmaster on 0871 871 0777 or via the Middlesex Sevens website, www.middlesex7s.com, at £25 for adults and £10 for Under-16s.
