Lottery boost for youth rugby in Bromley

21 Septemebr 2005 -

Youth rugby in Bromley is to benefit from a £5,000 grant from the National Lottery's Awards For All programme.

The grant will help the Bromley Rugby Development Group (BRDG) launch district Under-14, 15 and 16 sides to benefit the best young school and club players in the area.

All boys who live, go to school or play for a club in Bromley and have been nominated for Kent RFU’s development sessions are eligible to take part in the scheme.

"This is a fantastic opportunity to give some of these talented lads some extra coaching and to bridge the gap between school or club and county level rugby’ said BRDG treasurer Nigel Putner.

"For the past three years we have had a Bromley District side at U13 level, which has taken part in south east London festival sponsored by the RAF and Active Sports.

"However, until there has been nothing to support the development of talented sub-county players in these age groups. This award will enable us to build on the inter-district festival and provide additional coaching."

The BRDG is made up of rugby clubs within the borough, including Beccehamians, Beckenham, Bromley, Old Elthamians, Orpington, Park House and Westcombe Park, and work in partnership with representatives of the local authority Leisure Trust (Bromley Mytime).

BRDG chair and Kent RFU rugby development officer Matt Michell said: "Work instigated by the group, the player development scheme and the generous award from ‘Awards for All’ all demonstrate how clubs can combine and work together for the future of the game."

BRDG are now looking for managers and coaches to work the their players. For more information contact Nigel Putner at putner@gotadsl.co.uk
