Daily Mail Under-15 Schools Cup, Second round

MEDINA THRIVING ON ADKINS DIET

Medina High School are flying the flag for the Isle of Wight on their first appearance in the Daily Mail Schools Under-15 Cup.

The sport was reintroduced to the Newport comprehensive last year by two rugby refugees from Wales and Gloucester.

Dorian Williams was a schoolmate of Wales hooker Garin Jenkins at the Coed-y-lan school in Pontypridd, while Peter Cronin played alongside Mike Teague at Kingsholm in the 1980s.

Together they coach a talented young team that breezed through the first round 38-0 against Hounsdown to set up this week’s home tie against Embley Park from Totton.

Adam Adkins scored two tries, David Champion added two tries and four conversions and there was a try apiece from Josh Franklin and Marcus Militello.

Adkins, who captains the side, plays for Hampshire and is on the books of London Irish and his centre partnership with Champion has caused plenty of problems for opponents.

"Last year was the first season Medina has played rugby for a long time and we only intended it to be an after-school club," said Williams.

"But we’ve got some very good players in this group and they did so well we decided to enter the Daily Mail competition and the Hampshire Cup.

"We did well against Hounsdown but this is a real step up for us. We’ve got a chance. The challenge for us now is to see if we can match the organisation of these more extablished sides.

"The first round win was quite an achievement and it’s the talk of the school at the moment. This team has helped raise the profile of the game and rugby has certainly taken off.

"Last season we barely had 15 players, now we’ve got more than 20 and we’re hoping the next batch starting as under-14s will carry it on."

Also into the second round are Halliford, from Shepperton, who hammered RGS Guildford 50-0 away from home.

Halliford, coached by Ian Bardgett, have some pedigree behind them. The same group reached the final of the Rosslyn Park Under-13 Sevens in 2004 and nine of them appeared for Middlesex at Under-14 level last season.

"Rugby’s grown at the school over the last five or six years and we’re now running 10 teams in a school of 300 boys," said Andy Naish, the schools head of PE.

"This particular group is a very athletic one with plenty of good players and a couple of exceptional ones in fly-half James Adams a prop Daniel Ralph."

Halliford’s eight tries against Guildford shared by Rhodri Williams (3), Guillaume Veloso (2), Adams (2) and Will Hodgeson with Ashley Bryant kicking five conversions.

They face Isleworth and Syon later this week with the prospect of a high profile encounter with 2003 Daily Mail champions Whitgift to come in the third round.

Last year’s two finalists enjoyed mixed fortunes when their next generation of Under-15 players kicked off this season’s competition.

St Benedict’s, Ealing, won 12-7 against St Paul’s Barnes when two outstanding young sides met at Twickenham in April.

But they nearly fell at the first hurdle before they edged past Orleans Park 31-25 to earn a second round trip to Longford on October 5.

St Paul’s, Barnes, got off to a flying start with a 50-0 victory over Latymer School and now take on Coopers Company and Coborn.

Daily Mail Under-18 Schools Cup

WILKO AND IN AGAIN FOR HAMPTON

The last time Hampton entered the Daily Mail Schools Cup was eight years ago. They thought they had a pretty good side.

Scrum-half Simon Amor went on to captain England at Sevens and number eight Andy Beattie plays for Bath and England A.

They couldn’t compete, though, with Lord Wandsworth’s fly-half Jonathan Wilkinson and hadn’t appeared in the competition again until now.

"We play all sports and there’s a big commitment to rowing so the talent is spread around," said Steve Timbs, the master in charge of rugby.

"But this year is a much better than average side and the boys were keen to enter. They’re a strong all-round team with talent in the backs."

They’ve reached the third round of this season’s Under-18 competition in double quick time, knocking out Emanuel 53-0 and Latymer Upper 26-17 under the guidance of new coach Zoran Higgins.

The tries came from Will Browne, Richard Crawshay-Jones, Seb Jewell and Chris Edwards, who captains the side from number eight.

The face the winners of the Oratory v Verulam tie in round three and a fourth round meeting with St Paul’s Barnes is in prospect.

St Paul’s play Wimbledon College or Enfield in round three after a 40-7 victory over Richmond-upon-Thames College.

Also into round three are Wymondham College from Norfolk after beating Langley 33-3 and Norwich 36-21.

They play the winners of today’s tie between RHS Ipswich and St Joseph’s, Ipswich.
