Players from the RFU’s 14 Regional Academies join forces this weekend with radical orders designed to develop their attacking skills when they take on Australia Schools at Maidenhead RFC on Saturday (1pm).
The Academy players will be told the result doesn’t matter and kicking for touch or for goal has been banned by the management.
"The Australia side will be a real test for our young team but the result is of no real significance at this stage. It’s all about development," said coach Tosh Askew.
"We’re looking at playing the way we’ll need to do to win the World Cup in 2011 and we have to start as early as possible with these young players.
"We want to play an expansive, fast and open game that puts our players under pressure and tests their skills.
"We’ve outlawed kicking for touch and for goal from penalties in favour of tapping and going. We’re looking at developing their attacking play as our main priority."
The development of the team will be enhanced by two new coaches. Askew will be assisted by World Cup winner Neil Back, from Leicester, and former Gloucester and London Irish fly-half Mark Mapletoft, who is now on the coaching staff at Saracens.
The Academy Conference side represents the cream of teenage talent attached to the 12 Premiership Clubs, at NEC Harlequins and at the South West Academy.
The under-18 side includes 16-year-olds in key positions like fly-half Robert Miller, hooker Joe Williams and flanker Calum Clark, while an ‘over-age’ player is 18-year-old Bath University student George Hughes who captains the side from full-back.
Four other academy players not considered for selection are Hugo Ellis (London Wasps), Adam Greendale (Leeds Tykes), Andy Saull (Saracens) and Joe Simpson (London Wasps) who are now in the England Under-19 squad.
