English clubs hit jackpot in Grand Draw

This season's Rugby Football Union Draw Society"s Grand Draw generated £308,000 in tax free income for English clubs.

Six hundred clubs took part in the scheme and receive 90 per cent of the revenue raised from draw ticket sales.

The draw this season was made at Basingstoke RFC on Wednesday, March 8, by RFU President LeRoy Angel.

Top of a 45-strong prize list was Martin McKeown, who bought his ticket from Broadstreet RFC in Warwickshire, and claimed the £7,500 first prize sponsored by The Royal Bank of Scotland Group.

Second was Mike Coakley from Nottingham, who won two Club World tickets to New York or any European destination donated by British Airways, and third was Nick Kingett from Halesowen, who won a Fujitsu Siemens LIFEBOOK P7010 donated by Fujitsu Siemens.

The major winners, though, were the clubs. Six hundred took part, a rise of 18 per cent on last season, and they sold 343,000 tickets to raise 39 per cent more money.

Ninety eight clubs raised more than £1,000 and top of the list were Pulborough from Sussex, who raised £5,742, received £5,168 and picked up a further prize for doing so in the shape of a hospitality package for two to one on England’s Investec Challenge international’s next season donated by Twickenham Experience Limited.

The RFU’s Funding and Facilities Manager Simon Winman is delighted with the performance of the Grand Draw but still wants more clubs to take advantage of the scheme.

"We’re delighted with the success of this year’s Grand Draw - around 50 per cent of our clubs are now taking part and it’s now becoming an important way for them to raise more revenue," said Winman, who is the promoter of the Grand Draw.

"Clubs like Pulborough showed what can be achieved when everyone gets involved and 97 others raised more that £1,000 that they will use to benefit their club, whether by buying kit or equipment, or using it as partnership funding for bigger projects."
