England coach, Joe Lydon, today named the provisional 20 man squad for the Sevens tournament to be held at the Commonwealth Games, Manchester from August 2nd-4th.
Joe Lydon said "I’m pleased with quality and strength of the squad. It contains eleven full England internationals but, just as importantly, a wide range of players who have worked with the coaching team this season during the IRB World Sevens Series. Many players have contributed to the success we have achieved this year and helped us to attain a place within the top three world rankings. All justify their selection to the squad and the potential opportunity to play in the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
"Our major focus and goal must now be our performances in Manchester and I believe that within what will be a very competitive draw, we have the players and potential to challenge for a place amongst the medals."
Neil Baxter of Salford Reds joins the squad on a temporary release from his club in preparation for the Games. Added Joe Lydon, "Neil is an exciting talent who represented the England U19’s squad in last years FIRA World Championships held in Chile. I’m delighted to have been able to secure his availability with the support of his club, Salford.
"I am looking to all the players selected in this squad to make my task of selecting the final 12 and the Captain, as difficult as possible.
"The 20 man squad will attend a training camp in Ireland during the first week of July, followed by a second week of preparation in Bolton and Manchester. I will then announce the final 12 man squad on Monday 15th July."
