Ask Ashton - on The Academy System, Player Fitness and James Simpson-Daniel

March 13, 2008

Each week during the 2008 RBS 6 Nations, rfu.com has been giving England fans the opportunity to quiz England Rugby Head Coach, Brian Ashton.

Q Historically the English system has been guilty of letting talent fall through the net. What do you think of our Academy system – will it help convert more talent and what are your thoughts on Conor O'Shea?  Also which young players under the media radar should we look out for in future? James Smith

A Good question. I think England manages its young talent very well through the clubs, the 14 Regional Academies and the National Academy. I think Conor is doing a really good job and has done so since he took over his role running the National Academy in 2005. There are a lot of players coming through and it's good to see that the England U20 team are doing so well this season after winning their first four matches of their Six Nations Championship.

Q How do you peak the players’ fitness and how do you taper their programmes around matches?  Also, what will be the main changes for you when we go to the new system at the end of this season?  Mansel Thomas

A The new agreement, which takes effect in July 2008, will give us more preparation time with the players and that can only be a good thing for the players and the coaches. The players’ fitness levels are good and Calvin Morriss, our fitness coach, does a very good job.

Q How do you balance the need for team structure whilst at the same time giving players the freedom to express them selves individually? Andy Stokes, Buxton

A We do it by providing a general framework with specific details for each game that we play.

Q Hi Brian, simple question but why is James Simpson Daniel being overlooked? I would have thought his creative talents would be just what you’re looking for.  If you are picking on form, Simpson-Daniel has been excellent for Gloucester and I think the public believes he could do the same for England. Dave Thomas, Yorkshire and England Rugby Supporters’ Club

A James has been with the squad (during Scotland week) but he has an injury at the moment and wouldn't have been able to train with us until Friday. He, along with a number of other players not in the 22, remain in my thoughts.

Q  With only this one game against Ireland left before you have to pick a team to play against New Zealand in the summer, what are you hoping to achieve in it now that the tournament is now out of reach? Have you considered a different approach?  Hugo Knowles, Richmond.

A The coaching staff are looking for a big performance and a victory but it will be difficult, as it always is, against a very strong Ireland team.
