Dally calls on Hilly to Help the Heroes
Lawrence Dallaglio has called on old friend Richard Hill to show his support for Help for Heroes at Twickenham on September 20 (kick off 2.30pm).
Hill, arguably one of the greatest back row players in the modern game, was known as England’s ‘Mr Dependable,’ totting up 71 caps from 1997 until his retirement in 2008.
The British & Irish Lions back row will feature in Dallaglio’s Help for Heroes XV alongside fellow 2003 Rugby World Cup winners Martin Johnson, Will Greenwood, Dan Luger and Mark Regan as well as Rugby League legend Martin Offiah.
"I'm delighted that I can help out and support this fantastic cause in any way I can.” said Hill.
“In my rugby career, I've been fortunate enough to spend time with the armed services and have seen first hand the dedication and commitment they put into their jobs and it's important that we do everything we can to provide help and support for those whose lives have been changed forever in serving their country.
"But the chance to give something back to the servicemen and women who have given so much to their country and also play one more game at Twickenham with some of the biggest names in the sport is something that I didn't want to miss."
Hill hung up his boots last season and the news that he will be running out at Twickenham one more time comes the same day as he started his new role with Saracens, which will see him mentoring a group of young players at the club while also working on a number of new commercial projects.
"This is an exciting time for me as I’m starting a new chapter of my life, I'll have to make sure I ask my new boss nicely to see if I can get a bit of time off to train for the match," continued Hill.
"I'll be splitting my time between working with a group of talented youngsters at Saracens and working on a number of different commercial projects which I am really looking forward to.”
Former Green Howards army officer and England 1992 and 1995 Grand Slam winner Tim Rodber declared his full support for the Help for Heroes match.
Tim, who played his club rugby at Northampton Saints and represented the British & Irish Lions, said "The cause is a very good one and I hope the game receives a huge amount of support.
"I served as a Captain in the Green Howards for nine years at home and abroad and you can only admire the commitment and courage of the armed forces personnel who serve their country in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"The more help our service personnel can receive when they return home for their rehabilitation the better and I would ask that as many people as possible buy tickets for the game as their money will make a very real difference to the rest of the lives of those that have been injured."
The Help for Heroes XV, managed by former England captain Phil de Glanville, will face an International XV managed by Ieuan Evans and captained by Scott Gibbs. The match aims to raise £1million for Help for Heroes charity and the care and rehabilitation of injured British service personnel who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
