Coaching heavyweights reveal all
by Julia Hutton
World-class coaches Wayne Smith and Pierre Villepreux will this month headline two rugby seminars open to the rugby community in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. The heavy-weight coaches are set to reveal their ideas about coaching and winning games at Newbury RFC on January 13th and January 27th. Former French assistant coach Villepreux won recognition world-wide for his revolutionary coaches methods after France reached the 1999 Rugby World Cup final, beating pre-tournament favourites New Zealand along the way. Villepreux, who also won 34 international caps playing at fullback and fly-half, is set to kick-off proceedings with a ‘Breaking Down Defenses’ seminar on January 13th. The Frenchman will discuss France’s approach to attacking and beating defenses. Former All Blacks coach Smith, currently head coach of Premiership side Northampton Saints, will then front a seminar entitled ‘The Continuous Game’ two weeks later. Smith will outline his methods of attack and keeping the ball alive. The talks, which will also see both Villepreux and Smith leading practical sessions using county junior players, are the latest in a popular series - England Sevens coach Joe Lydon and ex-Welsh international and now Harlequins backs coach Paul Turner have previously led seminars. Tim Holmes, Rugby Development Officer for Buckinghamshire, said: “Our aim is to get top quality coaches sharing their know-how and this year is no exception with Pierre Villepreux and Wayne Smith. “The seminars are not just open to rugby coaches, but anyone who would like to attend and listen to what these great coaches have to say.” Anyone interested in attending the seminars must purchase tickets in advance. Tickets are priced at £7 and can be obtained from: Oxford RDO Office, Bury Knowle House, Headington, Oxford, OX3 9HY or telephone 01865 741380.
