England take on Wales in Sevens opener

 
 

England will start their quest for the Emirates IRB Cardiff Sevens title by taking on host nation Wales on Saturday.  The Hong Kong winners have been drawn in Pool B and will play France, Russia and Wales in the opening stages of the tournament.  Coach Joe Lydon’s side tackle Wales at 10.14am, Russia at 1.10pm and France at 7.34pm in the opening stages.

On Sunday, the Pool B winners will face the side that finishes second in Pool A, which contains top seeds New Zealand, Argentina, Portugal and Spain.

 

England named their 12-strong squad earlier this week which included newcomers Mark Cueto (Sale Sharks) and Duncan Roke (Worcester).

 

The other members of the squad are Simon Amor (Gloucester), James Brooks (Northampton), Matt Cannon (London Irish), Phil Dowson (Newcastle Falcons), Ben Gollings (NEC Harlequins), Paul Hodgson (Bristol Shoguns), Magnus Lund (Sale Sharks), Ugo Monye (NEC Harlequins), Pat Sanderson (NEC Harlequins), Rob Thirlby (Rotherham),

 

Lydon will name his squad for the final leg of the Emirates IRB World Sevens Series to be played at Twickenham on June 6-7 on Monday June 2.

Pool A: Argentina, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain

Pool B: England, France, Russia, Wales

Pool C: Canada, Fiji, Georgia, Samoa

Pool D: Australia, Italy, Scotland, South Africa
