Michael Foley on Bath Rugby's trip to Spala

The Bath Rugby players are currently undergoing an intensive training camp in Poland's renowned Olympic training centre in Spala. Bath Rugby coach Michael Foley gives the lowdown on what the players will go through in Eastern Europe.

"The thing that is unique about Poland and the reason for going there is to use the cryogenic chambers. It is also on Olympic training facility where teams from all over the northern hemisphere go to train,

"The chambers allow you to train hard twice a day. In Poland we will be able to train twice a day for the entire week instead of for once a day. Certainly the emphasis will be on strength and conditioning. We will be doing some rugby sessions but the aim really is to improve the squad physically while we are out there."

The idea behind Cryotherapy is that it allows the human body to recover and heal quicker by being exposed to short spells in temperatures of -120ÂșC.

"The players will use the cryogenic chambers at lunchtime just after they have trained in the morning and in the evening after they have trained in the afternoon. It is aimed at accelerating a player's recovery and allows them to train with a higher intensity for that period of time rather than fatiguing,

"The kind of thing we will be doing in the morning is to get the boys ready for the training day. We will be looking at flexibility and core stability issues to prevent injury first and then move on to weights, speed and skill work. In afternoon we might do a team session but they will be limited. We will also do some rugby sessions and they will be shorter and sharper with the emphasis on helping the players recover," said Foley.

For the past few weeks the players have been involved in some intense pre-season training mainly up at Bath University and Foley has been impressed with the attitude that they have shown so far.

"To me it seems like the players are setting their own standards, which is very good. It is more like an attitude than a response; it is not something that has been demanded of them in a lot of cases,

"In particular I think the guys are setting new standards for themselves, they are finding a level up from last season, an understanding of what they have to get to, to be successful towards the end of the season. From a coach's point of view, instead of feeling that you have to be constantly driving guys in the right direction, they tend to be driving themselves."
