Balshaw injury fears allayed

14th August 2005
Issued on behalf of Leeds Tykes
Leeds Tykes have been given a boost ahead of the start of the Guinness Premiership season with the news that England full back Iain Balshaw should be fit for the start of the campaign against London Irish at Twickenham on 3rd September.

Balshaw suffered a badly broken nose in the Tykes 12-7 pre-season friendly win over Edinburgh but after surgery on Saturday night the club have been told there were no further complication.

Director of Rugby Phil Davies said, "The surgery went well and we will monitor the situation on a week by week basis but at this stage Iain should be right for the start of the season. It's disappointing for Iain to have picked up the injury. He was playing really well and has looked good in training."

The Tykes won a close game in torrential rain in the first half against Frank Hadden's men at Headingley and were grateful to tries from Richard Parks and Andre Snyman and a conversion from Gordon Ross for the win.  Alastair Hogg got the visitors try with Duncan Hodge kicking the conversion on his return to Headingley.

Justin Marshall, who appeared for the Tykes for the first time, played the full eighty minutes. Speaking after the game he said, "There is an old saying in New Zealand that if you are getting the ugly wins, you'll be doing alright. We had to do it tough out there but we came through with the win. "It was really difficult in the first half. The rain just kept on coming down and it was hard to keep hold of the ball. Because the ball was so wet, the tighter you tried to hold it the more likely it was to pop out as soon as you hit contact.
"But I'm happy to have got my first game under my belt and after two weeks of talking finally get out there and play rugby, I was happy to have done that."
