Balshaw ready to face Wasps challenge

14th September 2005
Issued on behalf of Leeds Tykes
England international Iain Balshaw is looking forward to Leeds Tykes GUINNESS PREMIERSHIP clash with Champions Wasps as he looks to get back to his best after injury last season.

Balshaw suffered a thigh injury in the Powergen Cup Final that ruled him out of the Tykes epic end of season and the Lions tour to New Zealand. However, a first full pre-season he is confident he will be back to his best in the coming weeks.

"It was a disappointment at the time missing out on the Lions but I'm not even thinking about it now. I have had a good three months pre-season and I am concentrating on playing the full season for Leeds. It takes time to get back up to full steam but I feel like I am getting close to that now.

"We are disappointed with the way the season as started and we have a big challenge in front of us on Sunday. We haven't got off on the right foot so far this season but we know we need to put things right on Sunday or a team like Wasps can really take advantage.

"We are trying to play a different style this year and we have done a lot of work with Daryl Powell who has stripped the game right back to basics and working on core skills like catching and passing.  If you get the technique right, it can help you break the gainline and get behind teams but it will take time for what we are doing in training to be conveyed on the pitch.  We are changing the habits of a lifetime for the majority of players but when it clicks into place we will be in a much better position," added Balshaw.

Gerber and McMillan set for comeback

Tykes pair of Rayno Gerber and Mark McMillan are set to return from injury next week in the GUINNESS A LEAGUE fixture against Worcester at Chandos Park on Monday 19th September, kick off 7pm. For Gerber it will be his first appearance since the Powergen Cup Semi Final against London Irish on 6th March when he suffered a neck injury that ruled him out for the rest of the season. McMillan has made a quicker than first anticipated recovery from the elbow injury he suffered against Clermont Auverge in the pre-season Issoire Tournament.
The return of the pair will only leave Chris Bell as a long term injury in the squad. Commenting on his comeback Gerber said, "I am really looking forward to getting back on the field. It is a long time since I have played for the Tykes and I'm really excited about finally getting back out there.
