Disappointment for England as they bow out of Hong Kong

Sunday 1st April

England 0  New Zealand 26

Unfortunately it was no April Fool for reigning champions England as a powerful kiwi side beat them in the quarter final of the Hong Kong Sevens. Captain Simon Amor - who has only ever lost in Hong Kong once in the Rugby World Cup Sevens - was devastated saying "We were beaten by the better team.  The players worked hard but we didn't have as much ball as we would like.  We may have lost the trophy but only for 12 months and will be back."

In what should arguably have been the Cup Final rather than a knock out quarter final, England struggled to get possession.  New Zealand seized every opportunity and Pelenise scored first within just 45 seconds.

England couldn't take advantage of their line out and an error led to the kiwis's second try by Nigel Hunt.  Whenever England did have the ball they struggled to get it out wide to winger Charlie Amesbury and just couldn't finish their attack.

The New Zealanders seemed to be controlling the ball and the game and scored again before the break to make it 19 0 at half time.

The second half was much the same story for England with England's defence working hard to prevent an even bigger gap in the scores.  A great run by substitution David Doherty almost gave England a score but it was very much a case of catch up for England at the Hong Kong Stadium.  In the dying moments of the game the kiwis took yet another opportunity and Solomon King crossed the line leaving the final score at 26 0 and England's dreams in tatters.

England Sevens Coach Ben Ryan said, "They were a very good side and didn't allow us the space we needed.  When you are always playing catch up like that it is very tough.  We have great pride in what has been achieved here in the past by England and were not going to go down without a fight.  If you make small mistakes when playing a team like New Zealand you are going to be in trouble and that is what happened. This is an evolving season for England Sevens as our role is to develop players for the senior team.  We are at the stage right now where we are in the middle of developing the next wave of players.  We will come back all guns blaring next season."

Captain Simon Amor added, "The good thing about sevens is we now have a chance to put things right next week in Australia.  It will be a challenge as we will lose a couple of players and have to acclimatise but at least we have the chance to make some kind of amends next weekend."

Tom Williams, NEC Harlequins, said, "It was tough to come on so late and try and make a difference but I think we carried on fighting till the bitter end.  Both teams were really up for it and maybe we tried too hard and made some mistakes. There are a lot of disappointed players around right now."

Andy Vilk, Sale Sharks, said, "I am gutted.  We couldn't play to our game plan so they won.  The emotion of losing right now is incredibly painful."

England:
Simon Amor, captain, (London Wasps); Dave Seymour (Saracens); Jack Adams (Gloucester); James Brooks (London Wasps); Ben Russell (Saracens); Andy Vilk (Sale Sharks); Charlie Amesbury (NEC Harlequins)
Reps: Danny Care (NEC Harlequins); Tom Williams (NEC Harlequins); David Doherty (London Wasps)
Not used: Tony Roques (Exeter Chiefs); Nils Mordt (London Irish)

England travel to the Adelaide Sevens on Monday 2nd April.

Ends.
