London calling as Foden relishes Sevens stepping stone

BEN FODEN is back at Twickenham on Saturday hoping that his Sevens recall will be a stepping stone on the England ladder.

The Sale Sharks player is included in Ben Ryan's squad for the first time since breaking a foot in last year's Emirates Airline London Sevens.

And after a pick 'n' mix season at club level, moving between wing and his preferred No 9 spot at Edgeley Park in his 30 appearances, Foden is relishing his return to the representative stage in this weekend’s tournament.

Foden said: "I am enjoying being back with the Sevens. It’s always good to get some Sevens experience and to pick up new ideas, especially from the new coach. Ben is quite different to Mike Friday (former coach) but I am enjoying playing under him. He is teaching us to play more heads up rugby.”

The 21-year-old was a first choice for last year’s England Under-21 Grand Slam winning side and tipped for higher things but, too old for this season’s Under-20s and not included in the England Saxons squad, he has been confined to fighting the cause for a Sale side finishing 10th in the Guinness Premiership.

"It's been a difficult season at Sale,” admitted the Chester-born Foden. “There has been a lot of talk about injuries but I don't think we can blame them. We should have finished higher than we did. It's nobody's fault but the players.

"Obviously I have played a bit on the wing and at scrum-half. I would prefer to play at No 9 but hopefully I can take what I have learnt from playing on the wing and use it this weekend in Sevens.

"Things have completely changed in Sevens in the last 12 months. There are a lot of new faces but that's good for me as it means that players are pushing through from the Sevens to the senior team.”

England - fifth place in the IRB Sevens table - face a hard pool of Wales, Portugal and South Africa and Foden added:  “The Welsh boys will be tough as they are always up for a game against us and South Africa have been strong all season. But to win in Sevens you have to beat the best and we know that.

“Twickenham is a great spectacle and is every boy’s dream to play there and I have been lucky to go with Sale in the Premiership final and the London Sevens last year.”

Day One (Saturday May 26) sees England face Portugal at 11.34, Wales at 14.40 and then South Africa in the last game at 17.58.

Tickets to watch England - and 15 other nations including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Scotland - are on sale now from Twickenham Stadium from £10.
