England miss out on Sevens quarter-finals

June 2, 2007

England will finish the international sevens season playing in the Bowl competition at Murrayfield after failing to qualify for the quarter-finals of the IRB Edinburgh Sevens.

They had to beat New Zealand in their final Pool D game to stay in the main Cup competition.

But the day finished with a 38-0 defeat at the hands of the Kiwis, with Afeleke Pelenise scoring a second-half hat-trick of tries against them.

The defeat means England go into the Bowl contest for the second week running and they will face Canada, who finished bottom in Pool C.

They faced an uphill struggle following a 19-14 defeat to Argentina in their second pool game, in which Redruth’s Rob Thirlby scored his 99th international sevens try with NEC Harlequins scrum-half Danny Care also touching down and kicking two conversions.

England started the day with tries from Care, Isao Damudamu (Newbury Blues), Charlie Amesbury (NEC Harlequins) and Tony Roques (Exeter Chiefs) in a 24-0 win over Georgia.
