Strettle remembers his sevens days

With the Emirates Airline London Sevens on the 24 & 25 May, another 12 up and coming England rugby superstars are preparing to perform in front of a Twickenham home crowd.

For some, this will be their first run out on the Twickenham turf and the start of a bright future. Over the years sevens has seen the emergence of talented youngsters such as Mathew Tait, Ben Foden and James Haskell to name but a few.

London Sevens 2006 saw another star burst onto the scene, David Strettle. Since then the Harlequins winger has represented England at Saxons level and in 2007 got his England senior call up for the RBS 6 Nations.

“Winning Hong Kong in 2006 was a great achievement.” Said Strettle. “Twickenham is one of the last legs of the tour. We had played all around the world in some amazing countries but running out in your own country is always special.

“Sevens brings a real carnival atmosphere. It’s never like a XVs game, where the crowd come for the 80 minutes and then departs. The event will last for the whole day or
sometimes the weekend. It feels like one big party and the crowds will always give a warm welcome to all teams competing.

“Playing in front of a home crowd at Twickenham is always a humbling experience, and my time at Twickenham in the England 7s shirt is something I will never forget.”
