In at the Corner - National One

Otley 13 (Try: Sovatabua. Con: Binns. Pens: Binns 2.) 

Bristol Shoguns 16 (Try Nabaro. Con: Strange. Pens: Strange 3.) 

Champions Bristol finished the season with a win but only just as they were pushed all the way by Otley who lost for just the second time at Cross Green this season in the league.

Simon Binns put the home side ahead in the 6th minute with a penalty goal. It took another 21 minutes for the next score as Jason Strange levelled with a penalty goal for the Shoguns. Just before the break the visitors were over the home line with winger Luke Nabaro touching down and Strange converting for a 10-3 half time lead.

13 minutes into the second half and it was all square with Otley wing Waisale Sovatabua going in for a try and Binns converting.

Three minutes later and Bristol were ahead again with a Strange penalty goal. On the hour Binns levelled it up again with a penalty goal.

The winning score came in the 72nd minute when Strange kicked his third penalty goal of the afternoon in the final score of the match.

 

Pertemps Bees 57 (Tries: Baxter 2, P Knight, D Knight, Woof, Davies, Carter, Takarangi. Cons: Walsh 7. Pen: Walsh.) 

Sedgley Park 19 (Tries: Voortman, Skurr, Senior. Cons: Feeney 2.) 

After nine successive defeats in the league the Bees end the season with a comprehensive home win over Sedgley Park. They ran in eight tries, three in the first half and five in the second. Winger Nick Baxter bagged a brace of tries to top the try scores list at the club for the third time in four seasons and extended his club record to 54 tries in league rugby.   

 

Plymouth Albion 28 (Tries: Perry, Barnes, Shelbourne, Too’ala. Con: Barnes. Pens: Barnes 2.) 

London Welsh 12 (Tries: Vines, Holgate. Con: Meenan.) 

Plymouth Albion pick up their 19th win of the season and finish nine points clear of fourth placed Penzance & Newlyn.

Ed Barnes gave the home side the lead with a 5th minute penalty goal but they had to wait till the 22nd minute for the next score. It came from second row Andy Perry who went over for an unconverted try. Barnes did though add another penalty goal before getting the second Plymouth try in the 39th minutes as Albion went 16-0 ahead. Before half time though the Welsh did manage a try with replacement Matt Vines touching down.

It took till the hour mark for Albion to build on their lead with scrum half Bryan Shelbourne touching down and this time Barnes added the extras.

The visitors got a second try on 67 minutes with winger Tim Holgate touching down and full back Mark Meenan converting.

Albion did have the final say when they picked up the bonus point when No 8 Alfie Too’ala went in for an 8-th minute try, his 10th of the season.     

 

Rotherham 33 (Tries: Jorgensen, Lynch, Tuiavii, Palepoi. Cons: Benson 2. Pens: Benson 3) 

Exeter Chiefs 41 (Tries: Kingdom, M Fatialofa, Murdoch, Rob Baxter, Richard Baxter, G Staniforth. Cons: Kingdom 4. Pen: Kingdom.) 

Rotherham nearly picked up their best win of the season after leading this match for a large part of this match before the Chiefs came through with two late converted tries.

Exeter were first on the scoreboard with Gary Kingdom slotting over a 4th minute penalty goal. Two minutes later the home side were ahead with the games opening try from No 8 Opeta Palepoi. Lock Richard Baxter though went over for the first Exeter try in the 9th minute and with Kingdom converting they were 10-5 ahead.

John Benson pulled three points back with a penalty but when flanker Des Tuiavii went over for a try on 23 minutes Rotherham were 13-10 ahead and Benson made it 16-10 with another penalty goal on 29 minutes.

Exeter got back within a point when centre Mark Fatialofa went over for an unconverted try but just on 40 minutes Rotherham extended the lead to eight points with centre Peter Jorgensen touching down and Benson adding the extras.

Prop Brendan Lynch gave the home side another five points in the 44th minute and Benson converted. Exeter then ran in a couple of tries to get right back into it at 30-27 in the 66th minute after wing Ali Murdoch and Kingdom touched down.

Benson slotted over another penalty goal for a six point lead.

Tries in the 79th and 83rd minutes gave Exeter the win with No 8 Rob Baxter and replacement Graydon Staniforth scoring.   

 

Coventry 47 (Tries: Davies, Fifita, Addleton, Perry, Sanders, Johnson, Witkowski. Cons: Davies 6.) 

Bedford Blues 29 (Tries: Hinton, Ross, Tonga’uiha, Saayman. Cons: Hinton 3. Pen: Hinton.) 

Coventry moved above Bedford Blues with this win at the Butts Arena running in seven tries.

The home side built up a 26-15 half time lead with four first half tries and three conversions from Richard Davies. Leigh Hinton scored 10 of the Blues first half points including one of the two tries, his 10th of the season.

In the third quarter the home side moved into a commanding lead with three converted tries to make it 47-15 after 53 minutes.

Bedford did the rest of the scoring managing a couple more tries to pick up a bonus point in injury time.

 

Henley Hawks 26 (Tries: James, Laffin, Lubans, Johnstone. Cons: Honeyben 3.) 

Penzance & Newlyn 38 (Tries: Motusaga 2, K James, Senekal, Cattle. Cons: Jarvis 5. Pen: Jarvis.) 

Penzance & Newlyn consolidated fourth spot with this away win at Henley Hawks out scoring the Hawks five tries to four.

Both sides scored three tries in the first half but the kicking of Lee Jarvis proved the difference as he converted all three tries and slotted over a penalty goal

The Pirates took control in the opening five minutes of the second half with tries form scrum half Gavin Cattle and a second from Iva Motusaga which were both converted by Lee Jarvis who made it six out of six. 

The Hawks did get a fourth late on when prop Sam Johnstone went over for a try and Ben Honeyben slotted over his third conversion of the afternoon.  

 

Orrell 25 (Tries: Livesey, Viney, Briers. Cons: Moore 2. Pen: Moore. DG: Moore.) 

Nottingham 17 (Tries: Fitisemanu 2, Easter. Con: Thompson.) 

Orrell picked up just their second win of the season with this success over Nottingham after 16 successive defeats in the league. 

First half tries form prop Alistair Livesey and wing Oliver Viney converted by James Moore who also added a penalty goal to lead 17-0 at the break.

The Nottingham back row did get the visitors back in it with three tries in the final quarter with Nic Fitisemanu bagging a brace after coming on as a replacement whilst Mark Easter went over for his 9th try of the season.

James Moore dropped a late goal to give Orrell the eight point advantage which they kept till the end.
