Terrace Talk - National Three South

Check out our weekly previews and predictions ahead of this weekends matches.

Blackheath v Westcombe Park

Westcombe Park go into this Kent derby looking to do the double over the top of the table side Blackheath having won when they met at Goddington Dene earlier in the season.

Blackheath are going for a fifth consecutive league win to maintain top spot in the division ahead of chasing Launceston.

At home this season Blackheath have an excellent record with eight wins out of nine with only Barking leaving with the points.

Westcombe Park are going through a bad spell at the moment suffering four straight defeats and just four points clear of the relegation zone.

If Dings were to beat Old Colfeians and Blackheath beat Park there would be just a two point gap and Dings have a game in hand.

Team news:

Prediction: Home win by 20 points.

Haywards Heath v Redruth

Haywards Heath will be looking to continue their good recent form with a third successive win if they can beat Redruth at home in a run which has seen them move up to 10th in the league table.

With Westcombe Park having a tough match at Blackheath they could go three points clear of Park with a home win this Saturday.

At home this season Haywards Heath have managed just four wins from nine matches and could do with improving that form to climb the league table.

Redruth will have other ideas as they look to build on last Saturday’s excellent win over North Walsham and improve their poor away form which has seen them pick up just one win in eight.

When the sides met earlier in the season Redruth came out 35-19 winners.

Team news:

Prediction: Home win by less than 10 points.

North Walsham v Old Patesians

Could be a tough match for North Walsham this home match against Old Patesians. The home side will be keen to get back to winning ways after a narrow one point loss at Redruth last weekend after a late surge just failed to give them victory.

Old Patesians were away at Barking and came away with the points and a fifth successive league victory which has seen them actual drop a place with Southend moving above them on points difference after they had a big home win over Old Colfeians.

Old Patesians winning run will be given a real test against a North Walsham side that has won eight out of nine at home this season and need a win to keep in touch with the top two.

Team news:

The visitors, who are still without player-coach Bruce Fenley through injury, make two changes with Greg Herdman replacing James O'Brien on the left wing while James King replaces Pete Mitchell at tighthead prop.

Old Patesians: S Pollok; R Nunn, D Field, B Parker, G Herdman; J Steckbeck, D Morre; J King, R Bissett, J King, J Stickland, C Raymond, P Cashmore, D Parry. S Miller. Reps: J Pettigrew, S Wiltshire, R Nock, J Hyde.

Prediction:  Home win by 12 points.

Old Colfeians v Dings Crusaders

A real four pointer here with Old Colfeians hosting Dings Crusaders as these two try and escape one of the relegation places.

Dings are going for three in a row after a win at Weston two weeks ago and then a home success over Tabard last week, both matches that you would have bet against them.

Old Colfeians will be trying to get last week’s heavy loss at Southend out of their system and are a different side at home. Three of their four wins this season have come at home with just one success on the road, and that was at – Dings earlier in the season 19-13 so they will be going for the double.

Dings have won just twice on the road this season but they were at Tabard and Weston, which are not easy places to go and win.

Team news:

Injuries and unavailability means that Dings are forced to make several changes including Michael Hook, on loan from Bristol Shoguns, coming in at fly-half as Chris Poole switches to centre replacing Mark Davies who has an ankle injury.
The vastly experienced Nick Seward returns to the side at full back as Dean Weaver is not available. In the pack Ian Lane is not available to travel so James Luck comes in at blindside.
Problems continue in front row with Jason Cotton (calf injury) out for a fifth week and Conor Flanagan sidelined with a collar bone injury. New Zealander Iain Hudson is set to play at loosehead but is due to return home early James Winters is on standby.
Dings Crusaders (away v Old Colfeians, 2.30pm): N Seward; C Jenkins, C Poole, I Johnson, S Edwards; M Hook, W Gasson; T Sealey, P Fincken (capt), I Hudson, M Jefferies, D Bufton, J Luck, S Williams, V Murrell. Reps: J Winters, C Farley, M Strafford, M Lucas.

Prediction: Big game for both sides will go home win less than 10 points.

Southend v Barking

After three defeats in their last five matches Barking really need to find some form if they are going to have a chance of a top two finish and that form needs to start this week. It will be tough though going to Southend who are going for a third consecutive win as they look to move into the top half of the National Three South League table.

Barking have one of the better record in the division for sides on the road and have picked up five wins in eight matches including a win against top of the table Blackheath.

Southend at home have a 50/50 record with four wins and four defeats and will be pushed to beat Barking.

When the sides met earlier in the season it was Barking ran out comfortable winners 47-22.

Team news:

Prediction:  Southend to keep Barking bad recent form going with 10 point win.

Tabard v Launceston

Tabard are an enigma this season with some great wins and some disappointing defeats, which continued last week when they were beaten at Dings Crusaders.

They have fell off the pace recently suffering three successive defeats and dropped to seventh in the league table.

Launceston returned to winning ways last Saturday with a home win over Weston after losing at Blackheath the week before.

They need to win here to keep the pressure on leaders Blackheath who are at home this week and should get another two points.

On the road this season Launceston have managed six wins in eight matches whilst Tabard at home this season have won five out of eight and had good wins over Barking and Blackheath already.

Team news:

Prediction:  Launceston to take it by 12 points.

Weston super Mare v Basingstoke

Weston will be keen to stop a two match losing run with a home success over bottom of the table Basingstoke. They were beaten at Launceston last Saturday but the week before they suffered a shock home loss against Dings.

At home this season they have not done as well as they would have like with five wins and three defeats to date.

Basingstoke have yet to win on the road this season losing all nine matches.

When the sides met earlier in the season it was Weston who just came out on top in a tight game 25-22.

Team news:

The Seasiders, fifth in the table, include former Bristol and Bridgwater fly-half Nick Edmonds for his second game for the club, Jon Pitt returns to the side in the second row so Andy Glen switches to blindside flanker at the expense of play-coach Johnny Gordon
Weston-super-Mare: J Reid; J Edwards, S Bennett, J Walters, P Sprauge; N Edmonds, M Britton; D Swann, D Bird (capt), M Down, A Richards, J Pitt, A Glen, G Sparks, N Smith. Reps: Q Webster, A Russell, J Gordon, J Richardson.

Prediction: Home win by 15 points for Weston.
