In at the Corner - National One

Check out all the action from the weekend.

Bedford 24 (Tries: Kirk, Malone. Con: A Hepher. Pens: Hepher 4.)

Coventry 20 (Tries: Brocklehurst, Freeman. Con: Cull 2. Pens: Cull 2.)

Closely fought match with Bedford coming thorough to take the points but Coventry did pick up a bonus point although they stay in the relegation zone.

Gareth Cull kicked the visitors ahead in the third minute but the lead last two minutes with Ali Hepher responding for the home side. A minute later though and the visitors were ahead again with left wing Simon Brocklehurst going over for the games opening try and Cull converted for 10-3. The fast start to the match continued with Hepher kicking a ninth minute penalty goal. With half time approaching the home side went ahead with a 35th minute try from centre Tom Kirk for 11-10. In the 39th minute Coventry took the lead back with a try from flanker Steve Freeman that Cull converted for a 17-11. In injury time Hepher slotted over a third penalty to send them in three points adrift of Coventry.

In the second half the third quarter was scoreless but in the 64th minute Bedford were ahead with a try from scrum half Dominic Malone, which Hepher converted, and then four minutes later slotted over a penalty goal for a 24-17 lead.

Late in the match Jared Barker kicked another penalty for the visitors to get within four but that was it and Bedford took the win. 

 

Plymouth Albion 55 (Tries: Ward-Smith 4, Schusterman, Paoletti, Pearl, Fisilau, Robinson. Cons: Barlow 5.)

Henley Hawks 0 (.)

Comprehensive win for Albion against relegation threatened Henley Hawks

The home side went ahead when No 8 Dan Ward Smith went over on six minutes for his first of four tries as he took his total for the season u to 15 for the season. By half time hooker Stewart Pearl and a second Ward Smith try sent the home side in 17-0. In the second half Albion ran in six more tries with winger Lee Robinson getting the final try to take his total for the season to 20, two ahead of Leigh Hinton (Orrell) and Gavin Pfister (Worcester). 

 

Pertemps Bees 18 (Tries: Takarangi, Jenner. Cons: Strange. Pens: Strange 2.)

London Welsh 31 (Tries: Strong 2, Swords, Anayi, Collier. Cons: Pugh 3.)

Excellent away win for the Welsh against the Bees at Sharmans Cross.

Winger John Swords gave the visitors the lead on 10 minutes with a try, which went unconverted. The Bees though were ahead on 28 minutes with right wing Aaron Takarangi going over and Jason Strange converted to put the home side ahead.

Before half time the other London Welsh wing James Strong goes over and Dylan Pugh converts to send the visitors in 12-7 ahead.

Early in the second half No 8 Jim Jenner gets the second home try and although Strange missed the conversion he slotted over a penalty a minute later for a 15-12 lead.

Just before the hour mark the visitors were back in front with flanker Martin Anayi touching down and Pugh again converting.

Strange slotted over a penalty goal a few minutes later to get the home side back within a point.

The Welsh though finished the stronger with two late tries from second row Tim Collier and then Strong completed a double to round off the win.

 

Exeter Chiefs 14 (Tries: Yapp, Vaili. Cons: Yapp 2.)

Worcester 25 (Tries: Garrard, Daly. Pens: Brown 2, Hayes 3.)

Leaders Worcester were given a tough match by in form Exeter before coming through to take the win but missed out on the four try bonus.

James Brown kicked the visitors ahead on 15 minutes but three minutes later Tony Yapp went over for a try and added the conversion for a 7-3 lead.

Just before the break though winger Chris Garrard went over for a try, Brown missed the conversion but in injury time slotted over a penalty goal for an 11-7 lead at half time. 

Hooker Ben Daly went over for the second Worcester try on 46 minutes and then a few minutes later Tommy Hayes slotted over a penalty goal for a 19-7 lead.

The home side got a second try just after the hour mark from flanker Siaosi Vaili and Yapp added the extras to get back within five points of Worcester.

Hayes took the visitors away from Exeter with two more penalty goals to secure the win.

 

Orrell 28 (Tries: Welding, Hinton, So’oialo, Cattle. Cons: Hinton 4.)

Otley 14 (Tries: Williams, Law. Cons: Binns 2.)

Home win for Orrell who are virtually guaranteed second place, as with the Bees losing they are now 14 points clear, the problem is they are 18 points behind Worcester.

They were off the mark on four minutes with left wing Leigh Hinton crossing the Otley line and adding the conversion for 7-0.  They doubled their lead on 23 minutes with scrum half Steve So’oialo touching down and again the reliable boot of Hinton adding the extras and they went in at half time 14-0.

In the second half replacement scrum half Gavin Cattle went over on 51 minutes for a 21-0 lead with Hinton again converting. Right wing Richard Welding got the bonus point with the fourth try on 60 minutes and a 28-0 lead with Hinton converting.

Otley did finish with a couple of late tries but it was always Orrell who were going to take the points.     

The Otley tries came from second row Paul Williams and centre Neil Law that were both converted by Simon Binns.

 

Penzance & Newlyn 48 (Tries: Bearman 2, Jess 3, Pellow, Morgan, Thomas. Cons: Evans, Pellow 2, Scrivener.)

Manchester 9 (Pens: Brown 3.)

The Pirates continued their excellent home win with this comprehensive success over bottom of the table Manchester. They were ahead on three minutes with No 8 Joe Bearman going over and Steve Evans converted. Stuart Brown got the visitors on the scoreboard with a penalty goal. On 13 minutes winger Matt Jess got the first of his hat trick of tries for a 12-3 lead. Brown slotted over a couple of penalty goals but before the break Bearman completed a double and the Pirates went in 17-9 ahead.

In the second half Jess got his second two minutes into the half before three tries in six minutes took them out of sight at 41-9 after 55 minutes as Jess completed his hat trick and full back Steve Thomas and scrum half Ricky Pellow also crossing the Manchester line. The final score came from second row Martin Morgan in the 74th minute to round of the win.

Bristol Shoguns 19 (Try: Kohn. Con: Gray. Pens: Gray 3, Hook.)

Wakefield 15 (Pens: Murphy 5.)

Bristol came out on top in this match with Wakefield getting a bonus point for losing by less than seven points as they look to avoid relegation at the end of the season.

Peter Murphy got the visitors on the scoreboard with a 2nd minute penalty goal but Danny Gray replied for the home side three minutes later. By the 27 minutes Wakefield were 12-9 ahead with four Murphy penalties compared to three from Gray.

The only try of the match came with half time approaching when second row Ollie Kohn crossing the visitors line and with Gray adding the conversion they went in 16-12 ahead.

In the second half both sides added a penalty goal as Bristol hung on to take the four points.
