Bradford & Bingley 40 (Tries: Hala’uifa 2, Sutcliffe 2, Nau, Dixon. Cons: Harvey 5)
Birkenhead Park 0 ()
Whilst Bradford and Bingley were superior in all departments the game was closer than the result suggests. A hard game was marred halfway through the second half when the Bees’ talismanic Tongan number 8, Hala’uifa, was stretchered from the field and taken to hospital with a neck injury. Hala’uifa had opened the scoring when he stripped Park of possession in the tackle and galloped 75 metres to the posts, giving Harvey an easy conversion. Bees then allowed chances to go begging until on half time winger Sutcliffe broke through poor tackling to score out wide leaving a midway score of 12-0. Bees soon scored again after the break when Dixon rode three tackles to slip the ball to the supporting Nau who strolled the 20 metres to the posts, Harvey again converted. Bees were now habitually attacking from all over the field and Nau superbly held up the ball before shipping it to Dixon who scored with ease. Harvey added the points. Fly-half Harvey then showed his dazzling skills by stepping off both feet before passing out of the tackle for Hala’uifa to run 50 metres to touch down. Following an off the ball shoulder charge, Park’s Jones was lucky to receive only a yellow card, Bees kicked to the corner and from the line-out Sutcliffe was driven over for Harvey to finish the scoring with a great kick.
West Park St Helens 29 (Tries: Wilson, Newman, Roberts, Webster. Cons: A Soutar 3. Pen: A Soutar.)
Huddersfield 0 ()
|Comfortable win for West Park with all the damage done in the opening 40 minutes. Scrum half Darren Wilson got them on the scoreboard with a try in the 12th minute, which Andy Soutar converted for 7-0. Soutar added a penalty on 16 minutes and a minute later they had their second try with flanker Carl Newham going over and with Soutar adding the extras they were 17-0 ahead in as many minutes.
Winger Andy Roberts extended the lead on the half hour mark and again Soutar was on target and they went in 24-0 ahead.
In the second half Park had to wait till the 73rd minutes to add to their total when left wing Phil Webster went over for a try to round of the win.
Sheffield 24 (Tries: Burgess, Young. Con: Pearson. Pens: Pearson 4.)
Chester 16 (Try: T Foden. Con: King. Pens: King 3.)
Excellent home win for Sheffield over Chester who had the better of the first half.
Chester went ahead in the 7th minute when Murray King slotted over a penalty goal. Sheffield replied seven minutes later when winger Matt Burgess went over for the games first try and they were 5-3 ahead. Chester were back in front seven minutes later when Tom Foden, playing full back this week, went over for a try and King added the extras. Pearson slotted over a 24th minute penalty goal but by half time King had kicked two more penalty goals and Chester went in 16-8 ahead.
In the second half Sheffield did all the scoring with Pearson slotting over three penalties between the 50th and 70th minutes for a 17-16 lead.
Full back Tom Youngs took them two scores clear in the 76th minute with a try and Pearson slotted over the conversion to secure the win.
Morley 8 (Try: Sonia. Pen: Stephens.)
Vale of Lune 30 (Tries: Brookes, Bryan, Bird, Penny, Darwen, Hoyle.)
Excellent away win for Vale of Lune against a Morley side that had been doing well recently.
Four first half tries saw Vale go in 20-3 ahead with a Colin Stephens penalty Morley’s only score of the half. Flanker James Hoyle got the visitors on the scoreboard with a try on five minutes and the lead was doubled when full back Ian Brookes went over in the 18th minute. The third try came just after the half hour mark from flanker Gareth Darwen. Stephens got Morley off the mark on 38 minutes but Vale got a fourth try in injury time at the end of the half from winger James Bryan.
In the second half they scored two more tries and it was not until five minutes into injury time that Morley crossed the visitors line when replacement back row forward Dave Sonia went over but by then the match was well over and Vale left with the points.
Cleckheaton 27 (Tries: Ackroyd, Dudley, Rika, Welch. Cons: Green 2. Pen: Green.)
Hull Ionians 32 (Tries: Smith, Robinson. Cons: Boyd 2. Pens: Boyd 6.)
Hull Ionians are a funny side struggling down at the wrong end of the table and they thump Chester at home and then go and win at Cleckheaton to secure the future in Powergen North One.
Although Cleckheaton out scored the visitors four tries to two they were punished by the boot of Glenn Boyd and Kirk Dixon who kicked three penalties apiece to punish the home side for their ill discipline.
Cleckheaton scored three first half tries from their forwards with No 8 Oliver Ackroyd and both second rows John Dudley and Craig Rika crossing the Hull line but Alex Green converted just on of them. Hull got two tries in the opening 40 minutes from winger Danny Smith and the second row Phil Robinson but with Boyd converting both and kicking three penalty goals Hull went in 23-17 ahead.
Early in the second half and Cleckheaton went back in front with a try from left wing Neil Welch which Green converted and then kicked a 52nd minute penalty goal for a 27-23 lead.
In the final quarter Kirk Dixon slotted over three penalty goals to carry the visitors to victory.
Aspatria 32 (Tries: Stoddart, Richardson, Dobie, Miller. Cons: Stoddart 3. Pens: Stoddart.)
Driffield 24 (Tries: Plumridge, Kitching, Dench, Ollett. Cons: Kitching, Piercey.)
Just what the doctor ordered as Aspatria try and finish the season on a high note despite relegation although at the end of the first quarter they were 10-0 down with Driffield running in a couple of tries.
Steven Stoddart then got the home side on the scoreboard with a penalty goal. He then went over for a try, which he converted on 35 minutes and slotted over a 40th minute penalty to give his side a 13-10 half time lead.
Two minutes into the second half and Player/Coach Mark Richardson was again on the scoresheet with his 8th try since returning to playing and with Stoddart again on target they were 20-10 ahead.
Centre Kyle Dench got the visitors back in it with a try on 49 minutes but two more home tries by the hour mark saw them pull away. With centre Ryan Dobie and full back Andrew Miller crossing the Driffield line. |
