Longton 10 (Tries: Lochee Bayne, Turner.)
Preston Grasshoppers 27 (Tries: Flynn 2, Monaghan, O’Toole. Cons: Tuihalamaka 2. Pen: Tuihalamaka.)
Report courtesy of Preston as still awaiting Official Match Result Card from Longton.
Hoppers first ever visit to Longton was bedevilled by the vicious wind which blew diagonally across the pitch. Rugby was thus something of a lottery but it was Hoppers who held the winning tickets.
The adapted to the conditions better than their hosts. Using the elements in the first half to build up a lead they then contained Longton after the break with sensible, controlled rugby.
In a fine team performance No 8 Richard Morton, badly missed with along term injury this season, was outstanding and he had excellent support from his two experienced colleagues, flanker Paul Manley and the abrasive Chris O'Toole at scrum half.
This streetwise trio were complemented by the younger element. Andrew Dockray, benefiting from playing alongside Manley and Morton, completed a dominant back row. Sam Houston at centre was always alert and causing problems whilst prop John Peterson celebrated his 18th birthday with a competent debut against an opponent whose greater years and build were no advantage.
Hoppers took the game to Longton from the start. A charged down kick almost brought a try to Russell Flynn who was edged into touch and over promising moves were halted by a knock on and offside.
Longton's first incursion into Hoppers half was repulsed and a long downfield kick by O'Toole led to the first score. Oliver Viney, who made a telling contribution with his sorties from fullback followed up and as the ball ran loose he gained possession to send Gary Monaghan round under the posts for try converted by Sengili Tuihalamaka to make it 7-0 after 12 minutes.
A fine break by O'Toole and a chip ahead by Viney taken on by Monaghan and Paul Bailey looked promising and as the pack were gaining the upper hand in the scrums Longton were on the backfoot.
A grubber kick by O'Toole was thwarted by the minimal ingoal area but advantage brought play back for a Hoppers penalty, which Tuihalamaka kicked from short range on 28 minutes.
Two minutes later Hoppers scored again when O'Toole, Manley and Viney had a hand in setting up an unconverted try for Flynn.
Longton flanker Paul Sheldon was shown a yellow card and as Hoppers pressed O'Toole and Manley were held up near the line. A pushover try for O'Toole after electing a scrum instead of a penalty and a fine conversion from wide out by Tuihalamaka gave Hoppers a 22-0 lead at half time.
If Hoppers expected an onslaught against the wind on the restart they were not disappointed and with two minutes Longton had breached their defence with an unconverted try by Ed Lochee-Bayne.
Hoppers the shut up shop and excellent tackling denied Longton who were forced into error. Resultant scrums enabled close control as Morton time and again picked up drive forward.
Five minutes fro the end Longton did score again when they ran a penalty on the 22 to get lock Gary Turner over in the corner for 5 points.
Hoppers were not finished and as another Longton attack was disrupted O'Toole put up a high kick, which floated across the pitch, and it was Houston who claimed possession. He set up a flowing move involving Tuihalamaka, Viney and Bailey to give Monaghan his second try to set the seal on a well deserved victory. |
