National One

Bedford 38 Pertemps Bees 26

Excellent home win for Bedford Blues over the Pertemps Bees after a powerful first half performance building up a 28-7 lead.  

Bedford remain in seventh place after this win but have closed to within a point of the two sides immediately above them in the league table whilst the defeat leaves the Bees in the sights of Plymouth Albion who are finishing the season strongly.

Ali Hepher kicked the homes side ahead with a 2nd minute penalty goal but two tries in two minutes saw them open up a 15-0 lead after 18 minutes with winger Spencer Brown and Hepher crossing the visitors line. The Bees got on the scoreboard on 22 minutes with winger Aaron Takarangi scoring and Mark Woodrow added the extras.

The Blues though extended their lead with two Hepher penalties goal before in first half injury time hooker Paul Saffy went over and Hepher was again on target and Bedford went in with a commanding 28-7 lead.

In the second period the home side went further ahead with second row Arthur Brenton getting the fourth home try on 47 minutes and again Hepher added the extras.

Just before the hour mark Takarangi completed a double for the Bees and Woodrow converted. Hepher kicked a fourth penalty goal before the Bees had the final say with a couple of late tries through wing Nick Baxter and replacement back Geoff Gregory.   

 

National Two

Bracknell 15 Esher 38

This excellent away win saw Esher move up to eighth place in the National Two league table and they are now above Bracknell on points difference.

They trailed though at half time and had to come back in the second half, which they did for a convincing, win in the end, with new boy Emile Wessels again amongst the points.

Wessels was first on the scoreboard with a third minute penalty goal. The home side were ahead though on six minutes with James Ogilvie Bull scoring the games opening try and Neal Hallett converting for a 7-3 lead. Two more Wessels penalties saw the visitors back in front by the 14th minutes. The lead lasted four minutes before Hallett slotted over a penalty goal but again Wessels responded with a 25th minutes penalty to put Esher ahead again. Hallett slotted over two penalties for Bracknell late in the first half to send the home side in 16-12 ahead.

The second half was all Esher with Piers Gregory going over for a try six minutes into the half and with Wessels adding the conversion they were 19-16 ahead and never looked back. Wessels added two more penalty goals in the 52nd and 56th minutes before full back Ed Jennings got the second try on 61 minutes and again Wessels was on target before rounding off the win with a 79th minute penalty goal to take his total for the match to 25 with nine of his 10 kicks finding the target.  

 

National Three North

Liverpool St Helens 19 Darlington Mowden Park 24

Simon Worsley missed an early penalty goal to give the home side the lead but in the 19th minute the visitors were in front. They scored a try with fly half David Richardson crossing the home line and adding the conversion for a 7-0 lead. Worsley did get the home side on the scoreboard on 32 minutes with a penalty goal but the visitors went in ahead at the break.

In the second half Worsley kicked LSH ahead with a couple of penalty goals on 2 and 59 minutes.

Darlington MP were back in front just after the half hour mark with winger Pedram Salahshouri went over for an unconverted try. 10 minutes later they were 12-9 ahead with scrum half Richard Holbrough going over and Mark Bedworth converting for 19-9.

Ally Young got the home side back in it with a try on 75 minutes but a few minutes later the visitors were again 10 points ahead with Richardson going over for his second try.

LSH did manage the final score of the match with Dave Gaskell going over on 80 minutes for an unconverted try.   

 

National Three South

Convincing win for Old Patesians against Old Colfeians with right wing James O’Brien equalling the record for match tries in a match in the division. He equals the record of Penzance winger Richard Newton who ran in seven tries as the Pirates thrashed the Metropolitan Police 136-6 back in April 2000.

The home side were quick out of the blocks and were 14-0 ahead after 10 minutes with tries from centres Robert Nock and Carwyn Thomas and Nock converting both. Alasdair Kennedy then got the visitors on the scoreboard with a penalty goal after 13 minutes.

O’Brien got his first try on 21 minutes and his second came on 32 minutes to help his side go in 29-3 at the break. His hat trick try came three minutes into the second half; he scored the next four tries to equal the record in the 75th minute. The final home try came from flanker Sean Wiltshire, Nock converted seven of the tries and ended the day on 22 points. 

O’Brien took his tally for the season to 13 just two behind the leading try scorers in the division.
