Northumbria Win BUSA Halifax 7s

Northumbria University women’s rugby team won the inaugural British Universities Rugby 7s title on their home ground, Bullocksteads sports ground, with some determined rugby against quality opposition. Having sneaked through the group stages by only two points over Leeds University, after a victory over Durham University 17-12 in their opening match, followed by draws against Leeds University (15-15) and St Mark & St John (10-10), they faced Crewe & Alasger in the semis, with the other being contested by Leeds University and Nottingham Trent.

The semi-final brought out the best in the Northumbria girls with a 20-0 victory and two tries before half time from Claire Cruikshank followed by tries in the second half from Vikki Rivett and Northumbria player of the tournament Susan Coates.

The final’s hard fought battle saw Northumbria race to a 12-0 lead with tries from Coates and Melanie Christie, one converted by Cruikshank. Leeds fought back with a try from their England Academy centre Caroline Bell, bringing the half time score to 12-5. A fine break from Iona Frickleton then led to a score by Sophie Weaver, converted by Cruikshank. Leeds fought back with two tries in the closing stages but Northumbria held on for a 19-15 victory to take the RFUW sponsored trophy, presented to captain Claire Cruishank by RFUW Academy Coach Phil Forsyth.
