East Yorkshire Lasses

East Yorkshire Girls and Women’s Rugby Development group’s windfall of £5,000 from Awards for All has enabled them to promote player development sessions, coach education, coaching opportunities for girls and club development as well as to purchase much needed equipment.

Their second Player Development Day at Driffield RUFC offered assistance to clubs by providing work on core skills. Driffield RUFC have also been actively supporting the development of girls’ and women’s rugby and have introduced U16s girls rugby, while a recent RFU Foundation coaching course at Malton & Norton RUFC was aimed at increasing the number of qualified coaches in East Yorkshire and specifically aimed at women. Malton & Norton Ladies want to increase the number of players qualified to coach rugby, while recruiting new team players. They are actively promoting girls and women’s rugby in East Yorkshire and are keen to start an U16s Girls side.

A £3,000 Community Investment Fund (Cityvision) was also recently awarded for women’s and girls’ rugby union development in Hull providing equipment, coaching, tag festivals, introductory sessions, coach and club development and promotion of the game. The inaugural North East Girls Cup Final saw Blyth/Westoe (Lightning) beat old rivals Tynedale Panthers 21-5 for the first time. The two sides had come through their round robin pool stages unbeaten. In the 3rd and 4th place play-offs North Tyneside Tigers beat Morpeth 14-5 in a classy game.
